Fort loses MAC opener (12/20/2008)

FRHS boys basketball

ROCKFORD - The road to the MAC title got much more difficult Friday night.

Fort Recovery High School's boys basketball team, considered a top contender for the Midwest Athletic Conference crown, opened the league season with a loss. The last of 12 ties came with 1:48 to play, and the host Parkway Panthers scored their final 10 points from the foul line to knock off the Indians 58-54.

Parkway (4-0, 1-0 MAC) failed to hit a field goal in the final two minutes, but Zach Bates, Levon Archer and Drew Luginbill did their job at the foul line. Their free throws built the lead to 55-51 with 13 seconds to play, but Toby Metzger gave the Indians a chance with a 3-pointer just four seconds later. However, Luginbill buried a pair of foul shots with four seconds left and then split a pair with one second on the clock for the final margin.

Greg Kahlig shot 50 percent from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, to finish with a game-high 22 points for Fort Recovery (2-2). He has scored at least 20 points in every game thus far.

Metzger added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Brent Faller and Craig Tobe each had eight points and five boards, and Frank Thien finished with five assists.

Bates totaled 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Parkway. He hit all of his four free-throw attempts.

Archer scored 13 points, and Joshua Fisher had 10 points and three rebounds. Luginbill scored all of his seven points at the line, and also grabbed seven rebounds.

Fort Recovery, which trailed throughout the first half and never led by more than one point in the game, will return to action Dec. 26 and 27 at the Coldwater Classic.
