Fort places ninth at Coldwater (10/06/06)

FRHS cross country

COLDWATER, Ohio - Mindy Vogel and Tina Roessner ran their typical races and the rest of the Indians ran their best to give the Fort Recovery girls cross country team a ninth-place finish at the Coldwater Lions Invitational Thursday.

The Tribe's top two runners were both close to their best times of the season, and Sam Bihn, Amber Heitkamp and Sam Staugler all put up their best efforts of the year to score 251 points in the 20-team event. Division III No. 4 Versailles was first with 87 points, Division III No. 9 Fort Loramie (104) followed in second and Division II No. 10 Van Wert (130) was third.

Vogel ran her No. 2 time of the year for the Tribe (70-36), just seven seconds short of her best to place third in the field of 237 runners. She finished with a time of 19-minutes, 29 seconds behind only Mary Prakel of Versailles (19:21) and Rachel Huddle of Napoleon (19:26).

Roessner was just 11 seconds short of her best time of the year as she finished in a pack of runners just outside the top 20. She followed Valerie Barga of Versailles (23rd - 20:41) and Angie Cates of Arcanum (24th - 20:42) in 25th place with a time of 24:43, one second ahead of Emily Wuebker of Marion Local.

Bihn posted her fastest time in more than a month as she placed 55th in 21:34, 20 seconds better than the number she put up at the Greenville Invitational Sept. 2. Heitkamp was nine seconds faster than her previous best time, finishing 84th with a time of 22:26.

The biggest improvement of the evening came from senior Sam Staugler, who blew away her previous best time of the year. Staugler ran a 25:29 at Greenville and had been in the 26-minute range for much of the rest of the season before breaking through with a time of 24:11 at Coldwater to finish 138th.

Four of the Indians' top five boys placed in the top 22 out of 143 runners. Ryan Heitkamp gave the Tribe its lone runner in the top 10, pacing 10th in 12-minutes, 12 seconds.

Alan Vogel took 12th with a time of 12:28, Mathias Koester was 21st at 12:43.10 and Caleb Heitkamp took 22nd in 12:43.30. Derek Rammel finished the team effort in 46th in 13:20.
