Fort Recovery blasts unbeaten Rangers (12/19/03)
FR girls basketball
FORT RECOVERY — A quick glance at Fort Recovery’s 1-4 record along the New Knoxville Rangers’ 5-0 mark might not indicate an impending win for the Tribe. But, the Indians were not your normal 1-4 team.
They proved the point Thursday, handing New Knoxville its first loss of the year in a big way with a 62-37 victory. The Rangers were rated fourth in the area in Division IV by the Dayton Daily News.
“This was a team win,” said senior Olivia Post, who came off the bench to lead Fort Recovery 14 points without missing a shot from the field or the foul line. “It feels awesome.”
The Indians — now 2-4 and 1-1 in the Midwest Athletic Conference — may have come in with a less-than-impressive record, but they started the year against a brutal schedule of opponents. Their four losses came against teams who have started the year a combined 15-5.
Two of those squads — Minster and Jackson Center — were also ranked in the DDN top five.
And, said senior Jenn Stahl, “We were in all of those games we played. This (win) helped a lot — to play hard and get after it. This builds our confidence a lot.”
“There’s no question we played some quality teams,” said Fort Recovery coach Jeff Roessner. “Because of that we’ve had some adversity. What satisfied me most is that once we got a lead, we weren’t satisfied. We just kept pushing and pushing.
“The most pleasing thing of all was this was a bunch of kids who had every reason to be down on themselves for being 1-4. Instead, they busted their butts and earned themselves a win.”
Not only did Fort Recovery blow out the visiting Rangers (5-1, 1-1 MAC), but their only lead of the game was 2-0.
Other than allowing the opening points of the contest — free throws by Katie Pfenning — the Indians dominated the beginning of both halves. After trailing 2-0 they scored the next 11 points with Stahl hitting the first three buckets, two on put-backs.
Ciera Rammel added a 3-point play, and Joscie Kaup scored on an assist from Vicki Roessner before New Knoxville finally took a timeout.
The Rangers stopped the Tribe run and kept the game close for the rest of the half, but Fort Recovery owned the game after the intermission.
“We just wanted to come out strong right away,” said Stahl. “That’s what we did.”
“We weren’t going to let them get ahead at all,” added Post.
The Indians opened the second half with nine straight points, with Stahl again starting the scoring on an assist from Kaup. Roessner, Rammel and Post each added buckets for a 40-25 lead before allowing a point.
New Knoxville missed its first six field attempts in the third quarter and turned the ball over seven times. It did not score until Hannah Spieles split a pair of free throws with 1:37 left, and it got its only field goal when Katie Pfenning scored with less than a minute on the clock.
Fort Recovery was even more dominant in the final period, opening on a 10-2 run to put the game well out of reach at 53-32. The Indians outscored the Rangers 31-12 in the second half.
“Both halves, I don’t know if we just weren’t ready to play or what,” said New Knoxville coach Dwain Meckstroth of Fort Recovery’s fast starts. “They’re a good team.
“The shots we shot tonight are the same shots we shot last week. They just didn’t go in for us tonight.”
After shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half, the Rangers went just 4-of-21 (19 percent) after the intermission.
Kendal Bertsch paced the Rangers with 11 points, and Pfenning added nine. Nicole Wright had five points and seven rebounds.
Fort Recovery meanwhile got a tremendous team effort offensively, with Post and Stahl leading the way. Post was 4-for-4, including 2-for-2 on 3-pointers, and Stahl finished 6-of-7 for 12 points to lead the team to a 44-percent night from the field.
Ciera Rammel also reached double figures with 12 points. Roessner added eight points, and Kaup and Krystal Rammel each had seven.
“You have to give Post a lot of credit,” said Roessner. “And, if you take our point guard spot (Ciera Rammel and Vicki Roessner), we had 20 points from them tonight.”
The Indians also dominated the boards to the tune of a 35-20 advantage. Krystal Rammel had nine rebounds, and Stahl added eight.
Roessner dished out seven assists as the team did an excellent job of taking care of the ball. The Tribe had just 14 turnovers compared to 21 for New Knoxville.
Jeff Roessner also praised Kaup’s play as she finished second on the team with six assists.
“I think the place you have to give some credit is that we have Joscie Kaup, who leads this team in scoring, and she was very unselfish tonight,” he said. “She made some great passes. She wasn’t worried about getting her points, she was worried about winning.
“That’s what makes her such a great leader for this team.”
Kaup and Co. will try to score their first back-to-back victories of the year when they host Wapakoneta Saturday at noon.
Junior varsity
The Fort Recovery junior varsity team let a 10-2 first-quarter lead slip away, but overtime was all about Kelsie Will as the Indians surged to a 35-29 victory over New Knoxville.
The Rangers forced overtime with a score with 13 seconds to go, tying the game at 26. But, Will took over from there.
She scored the first basket in the first 10 seconds of overtime, and neither team scored again for another two minutes. Joslyn Rieneke banked in a 3-pointer with 50 seconds on the clock, but Will answered 11 seconds later to put Fort Recovery up 30-29.
Back on the other end Gina Bambauer missed a 3-pointer, and Will grabbed the rebound. Sara Fortkamp hit a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession for a 32-29 lead, and Will stole the New Knoxville inbound pass to seal the victory.
Will finished with a team-high 12 points. Tiff Gaerke followed with six points and 12 rebounds.
Kelly Link had six rebounds, and Fortkamp finished with three assists.
Haley Kruse led New Knoxville with seven points. Bambauer scored six points and grabbed five rebounds.
