Fort Recovery catches fire in OT (12/01/2008)

FRHS girls basketball

ST. MARYS, Ohio - The Indians managed only four field goals in the first half and shot under 23 percent in regulation.

But when Joanna Snyder gave them a chance to make up for those struggles, they did.

Snyder's score with just 16 seconds remaining forced overtime, and the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team made all of its field-goal attempts in overtime to beat the host Memorial Roughriders 36-25 in their season opener.

A dismal offensive performance from both teams left the score tied at 18 through three quarters, and Memorial took a 25-23 lead when Katie Burke split a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left.

But Snyder tied the game again 12 seconds later, and scored just eight seconds into the extra session to give the Indians (1-0) the lead for good.

Chelsea Leuthold added two overtime field goals, and Nicole Pottkotter added another as Fort Recovery shot 4-of-4 and blanked the Roughriders 11-0.

Memorial went 0-for-3 from the field in overtime, and missed both of its free-throw attempts.

Snyder, a senior, scored 13 points for the Tribe and was the only player for either team to hit more than three field goals. She also led the Indians with six rebounds and four assists.

Kendra Brunswick came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and finish with nine points. Kelsey Wuebker added six boards.

Burke's 10 points led the Memorial, which played each of its starters 33 minutes or more. Rachel Wale had eight points, four rebounds and three assists, and Carrie Schlater grabbed 10 caroms.

The Roughriders turned the ball over 26 times and finished at 26 percent shooting from the field.

Junior varsity

Holly Brunswick and Kelly Nietfeld each scored 17 points as the Indians blew out Memorial 65-14.

Brunswick shot 8-of-13 from the field and added five rebounds and three assists to her game-high scoring total. Nietfeld grabbed seven rebounds to go along with a 50-percent shooting effort.

Kylie Kahlig added nine points, and Abby Huelskamp had six rebounds.

Ashleigh Falk led the Roughriders in scoring with seven points. Rachel Geeslin had four points and five rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
