Fort Recovery downs Tigers (12/07/06)
FRHS girls basketball
FORT RECOVERY - The Indians opened the 2006-07 Midwest Athletic Conference season by avenging a loss to one of the five teams which defeated them last year.
Fort Recovery's girls basketball team dominated the final six minutes Thursday for a 47-38 victory over the Versailles Tigers.
The Indians never trailed by more than two points and led for most of the game, but a 3-pointer by Versailles' Emily Bohman tied the game at 29 with just 6:22 to go. The tie did not last long as Vicki Roessner drained a jumper 17 seconds later to give Fort Recovery the lead for good.
The Tribe (4-0, 1-0 MAC), which had a four-point lead with 16 seconds to play last season before Versailles rallied to tie en route to an overtime win, outscored the Tigers 18-9 over the final 6:05 of the contest. It got six points from Roessner, five by Tiff Gaerke, four from Holly Stein and a key 3-pointer by Joanna Snyder, and pushed the lead to as many as 12 points.
Stein, who hit all of her five free-throw attempts, finished with a team-high 14 points. She also had three assists.
Snyder added nine points and five rebounds, Roessner had eight points and three steals and Gaerke notched seven points and three blocks. Abby Niekamp added seven rebounds as Fort Recovery took a 29-18 advantage on the glass.
Justine Raterman, a MAC Player of the Year candidate, racked up 17 points and seven rebounds for Versailles, but didn't get enough help from her teammates. Bohman followed with eight points, and no other Tiger had more than five as they were limited to 32 percent shooting.
