Fort Recovery JV wins Minster tournament (10/17/05)

MINSTER, Ohio — The Indians dropped the first game twice Saturday. It didn’t matter.

Behind 61 kills from Kinsey Wenning and Sarah Braun the Fort Recovery junior varsity volleyball team won all three of its matches to take the Minster Invitational championship. It defeated Spencerville 25-9, 25-6, Parkway 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 and the host Wildcats 21-25, 25-16, 15-13.

Wenning and Braun finished one-two in kills in all three matches. Wenning had the high game with 16 against Minster in the final match of the day. She also reached double digits with 11 versus Spencerville and added nine against Parkway.

Braun had her best match with 10 against Minster, followed by a team-high nine in the win over Parkway and another eight versus Spencerville. She was also the team leader in digs in two of the three matches as she posted 14 versus Minster and six against Spencerville.

Abby Niekamp put up 18 assists in the final win over Minster, and Angie Wenning had 11 points, including four aces. Braun added a pair of blocks.

Niekamp also had 14 assists and 11 points against Parkway. Wenning, Heather Schmackers and Rachel Stahl each came up with five digs, and Braun had two blocks.

Wenning scored 14 points, including five aces as the Tribe topped Spencerville. Schmackers added 13 assists.

Freshmen finish 2nd

ST. HENRY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman volleyball team had an excellent effort Saturday, finishing second in the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament to the Marion Local Flyers.

The Indians made it to the finals by defeating Delphos St. John’s 25-9, 28-26 and St. Henry 19-25, 25-20, 15-13. They dropped the championship match 25-20, 24-26, 15-13 to Marion Local to finish the season at 15-3.

Emily May led Fort Recovery in the tournament with 20 kills. She also had 15 points, including four aces, and three blocks.

Chelsey Leuthold had 29 points, and Jessica Taylor followed with 19. Sylvia Schwieterman notched 16 kills while Josie Guggenbiller and Nicole Pottkotter each put up 15 assists.

Schwieterman finished with seven blocks, and Pottkotter had three blocks.

Cardinals top FR

NEW BREMEN, Ohio — The Fort Recovery junior varsity football team couldn’t match the result of its varsity squad as it took on the New Bremen Cardinals.

After the varsity Indians picked up their first win of the year over New Bremen Friday night, the JV team fell 6-0 to the Cardinals Saturday.[[In-content Ad]]
