Fort Recovery rallies past Tigers (08/23/03)

ANSONIA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery Indian football team entered the fourth quarter Friday night trailing Ansonia 22-11, and in desperate need of some big plays to get back into the game.
The Indians (1-0) got just that in the form of three fourth-quarter touchdowns — including an interception and fumble returned for TDs in the final four minutes of the game — en route to a come-from-behind 30-22 victory over the Tigers.
Junior quarterback Mark Willmann managed to take part in three touchdowns — a 65-yard pass to Tyler Wuebker, a one-yard run to open the fourth quarter and a 45-yard interception return with 1:49 on the clock to seal the victory.
Wuebker was involved in the other fourth quarter touchdown when he recovered a Ansonia (0-1) fumble and hauled it into the end zone from 55 yards out with 3:35 on the clock. The score brought his team to within one point at 22-23.
On the offensive side of the ball he had three grabs for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Willman was 5-for-6 passing the football for 143 yards and a touchdown. His solid passing was complemented by 64 yards rushing and one touchdown on 15 carries.
The Indians opened the scoring in the second quarter on Shawn Stein’s 28-yard field goal with 10:00 on the clock. The Tigers’ Shawn Shill responded with a 34-yard touchdown run to keep Asonia ahead 8-3 at the half.
Ansonia’s Tory Koesters sandwiched a pair of touchdown runs between Wuebker’s third quarter scoring catch to keep the Tigers ahead 22-11 entering the final period.
Fort Recovery’s 275 yards rushing was divided evenly between Willman, junior Greg Faller (66 yards on 14 carries) and sophomore fullback Nick Hemmelgarn (51 yards on 13 carries).
