FRHS boys basketball
UNION CITY, Ohio - It's time to take a break.
Fort Recovery High School's boys basketball team finished its regular season Saturday with a 72-44 destruction of the host Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks. Now, they have quite the break.
The Indians will not play again until Friday, February 22, when they will try for a sectional championship. They will battle the winner of a semifinal game between New Bremen and Minster.
Mississinawa Valley (6-13) provided a challenge to the Indians, who were 11th in the most recent Division IV poll voting, for a while, but simply could not keep up. After the Blackhawks took a five-point lead at the close of the first quarter, Fort Recovery (16-4) outscored them 60-27 the rest of the way.
The key stretch came at the open of the second half after a Gary Peace 3-pointer pulled Mississinawa Valley within two points. Frank Thien responded with a 3-pointer for the Indians to push the lead back to five.
Thien added four more points on fast breaks - one hoop came after a steal, the other on a sprint down the floor after a defensive rebound - as he scored all of his seven points in leading an 11-2 Indian run.
The Blackhawks briefly pulled back within single digits at 39-30, but Fort Recovery outscored them 32-14 over the final 11 minutes.
Sophomore Greg Kahlig led the Indians with 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. He shot 7-of-12 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and dished out four assists.
Seniors Bobby Rammel and Clint Tobe chipped in 14 and 10 points respectively. Rammel had six assists, Craig Tobe grabbed six rebounds and Thien added five steals.
Tracey Harris paced Mississinawa Valley with 16 points. Gary Peace added 12 points, and Ryan Dickey had 11 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Blackhawks, who shot just 22 percent in the second half and 26 percent for the game.
