Fort Recovery rolls to MAC victory (02/02/08)

NEW BREMEN, Ohio - It couldn't be called a blowout. But the Indians never trailed, and the result was never in doubt.
The Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team opened Friday night's game with an 8-0 run and never let its lead slip below five points in the final three quarters of a 56-47 victory over the New Bremen Cardinals.
The Tribe, which has been ranked in the top 10 most of the season and was No. 11 in the Division IV voting this week, got a 3-pointer from Greg Kahlig just 20 seconds into the game. Clint Tobe scored the next five points in the opening eight-point spurt.
New Bremen (9-7, 2-5 Midwest Athletic Conference) got within three at 14-11. However, after Bobby Rammel scored the opening five points of the second quarter for Fort Recovery the Cardinals never pulled within one possession again.
Rammel and Tobe each scored an efficient 17 points to lead the Indians, who improved to 13-4 overall and 5-2 in the MAC. Tobe went 7-of-14 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and Rammel was 5-of-7 on field goals and 4-of-5 from long distance.
They led a 51-percent shooting effort for the game, which included 12-of-21 (57 percent) in the first half.
Rammel also had a game-high five assists, and Tobe came up with three steals. Greg Kahlig finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Brent Faller grabbed nine boards.
Caleb Williams had 17 points for New Bremen, which shot 52 percent in the first half before hitting just 6-of-24 (25 percent) in the second. Scoot Schnelle had 16 points and nine rebounds, Williams grabbed six boards and Andy Timmerman finished with five assists.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery used free throws to overcome a dismal shooting effort from the field for a 34-30 win over the Cardinals.
The Indians (9-7) hit just 26 percent from the field, but outscored New Bremen 16-4 from the foul line. The Tribe shot nearly twice as many free throws as the Cardinals, 27-14.
Cody Fiely paced the Fort Recovery victory with 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Matt Braun had eight points and two steals, and Brady Kahlig totaled six rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
