Fort Recovery splits, draws the Flyers (05/05/08)
FRHS softball
FORT RECOVERY - Fourteen, not 13, was the unlucky number for the Tribe.
Through the first 13 innings Saturday, the Fort Recovery High School softball team was having fun. It had a game-one victory and a lead with just an inning to play in game two.
However, in the 14th inning of the day the Franklin Monroe Jets scored seven times and the Indians had to settle for a split instead of a sweep. They won the first game 5-1, and dropped the second 11-6.
Also this weekend, the bracket for the sectional tournament at New Bremen was set. Fort Recovery will play Marion Local in semifinal action Saturday at 11 a.m.
LeAnne Tobin led the Indians in the opener against Franklin Monroe, going 2-for-3 with a double, a run and three RBIs. Kinsey Wenning also had a single and a double, and Beth May scored twice.
Wenning picked up the victory, striking out nine batters while walking just one in seven innings. The Jets scored one unearned run on two hits.
In game two, Franklin Monroe came back against Wenning with help from Indian errors. Just two of the seven runs she gave up in the seventh were earned as she allowed four hits and a walk in three innings.
Tobin and Heather Schmackers each had two hits and a run, and Carla Guggenbiller scored three times.
If Fort Recovery (5-13) can defeat Marion Local - it lost 5-0 to the Flyers Tuesday - it would advance to play St. Henry for the sectional title Tuesday, May 13, at 5 p.m. The other half of the sectional bracket has New Bremen and Minster meeting in the first round Saturday at 2 p.m., with the winning advancing to play Parkway Wednesday, May 14, at 5 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
