Fort Recovery thumps troublesome Wildcats (01/06/06)
FRHS girls basketball
MINSTER, Ohio — A pair of thorns have been firmly lodged in Fort Recovery’s side for the last couple of seasons. One of them was removed, emphatically, Thursday night.
A dominant game from Tiff Gaerke led the Indian girls basketball team to a 49-31 trouncing of the Minster Wildcats.
Gaerke missed on just three of her 10 field-goal attempts, and was the only player on either team to reach double figures as she scored 15 points. She added 12 rebounds and two blocks, controlling the paint for Fort Recovery.
Minster (2-6, 1-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) won the 2004 Division IV state championship, then knocked the Indians out of the tournament last season. Marion Local, which won the 2003 state title and eliminated Fort Recovery in 2004, awaits the Tribe in three weeks. Those two teams have handed the Indians their only two MAC losses in each of the last two seasons.
Sam Staugler (4-of-5 field goals), Sara Fortkamp and Joanna Snyder each scored eight points for the Indians, who were in control most of the way despite several players battling illnesses. They trailed just once, at 2-0, pushed their lead to 11 points on a Sara Fortkamp hoop just before halftime and led by double digits for the entire second half.
Holly Stein finished with seven assists, and Ciera Rammel added five. Vicki Roessner had five of Fort Recovery’s 18 steals.
Laura Gruber was the top scorer for Minster with nine points, and Jodie Quinter added seven.
The Dayton Daily News currently has Fort Recovery (8-1, 1-1 MAC) at No. 3 in its Division IV rankings. The first state poll of the season from The Associated Press will be released next week.

The Indians limited Minster to just 23 percent shooting in a 32-25 victory.
Jill Pottkotter scored a game-high 13 points for Fort Recovery (8-1), which led by three at halftime and four after three quarters en route to the win. She also shared the game high of six rebounds with teammate Anne Koesters.
Koesters scored six points, and Kelsey Wuebker had five assists.
Jenna Westerheide and Austi Weitzel each scored seven points for the Wildcats, who made just 3-of-17 field goals (18 percent) in the opening half.[[In-content Ad]]
