ROCKFORD, Ohio — One down, eight more to go.
Fort Recovery started its try for a Midwest Athletic Conference title in successful fashion Thursday night. The Indians opened their 2005 MAC season by topping the Parkway Panthers 25-17, 16-25, 25-14, 25-19.
Junior middle hitter Tiff Gaerke dominated the match, racking up team highs of 15 kills and 12 blocks. She also had nine points and eight digs.
The Indians (2-0, 1-0 MAC) were also led by 15 digs from junior libero Vicki Roessner, 28 assists by junior setter Abby Niekamp and 12 points from senior Kristen Schwieterman.
Kelly Link added eight kills, and Lauren Wenning notched seven blocks. Brittany Brackman matched Gaerke with nine points.
Fort Recovery also won the junior varsity match against Parkway, 25-23, 25-14.
Kinsey Wenning set the pace for the JV Indians, who improved to 2-0. She had five kills, five points and four digs.
Heather Schmackers also had five kills to go along with six assists, and Joanna Snyder totaled seven digs. Angie Wenning had 10 points and seven assists, both team highs, and Sarah Braun added six points and three blocks.
Eighth graders win
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery eighth grade team surfed the Green Wave Thursday night, topping visiting Greenville 25-19, 23-25, 15-11. The seventh graders managed a game-two win, but fell to the Green Wave 25-19, 22-25, 15-11.
Jessica Taylor led the victory for the eighth grade team (2-0) from both the front and back rows. She had eight kills, sharing the team high with Emily May, and also notched a team-best nine points, eight of which came on aces.
May added seven points and two blocks. Nicole Pottkotter had eight points, and Sylvia Schwieterman had six kills.
Haley Wilson scored 20 points as the seventh grade squad dropped to 0-2. Deanna Hemmelgarn added eight points, and Holly Brunswick had six.
Nichole Kaiser finished with three kills, Holly Thien had two kills and Laura Braun added one block.[[In-content Ad]]
