Fort rolls in 2nd half

MARIA STEIN, Ohio - A tie game at halftime turned into a blowout.

The Division IV No. 5 Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team dominated the second half Friday, scoring nearly as many points at the foul line as the Marion Local Flyers did in total in a 60-40 victory.

Marion Local (7-7, 4-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) took a three-point lead early in the third quarter, but the Indians (15-1, 7-0 MAC) responded with a 22-3 run to take command. They led by at least 14 for the remainder of the game.

Greg Kahlig scored 11 of his game-high 34 points during the run. He hit 22-of-26 free throw attempts in the game as FRHS scored 34 points at the foul line.

He also had four rebounds and two assists.

Cody Fiely added eight points and five rebounds for the Tribe, which has won nine in a row. Craig Tobe also had eight points, and Wade Gelhaus contributed five points, four rebounds, three blocks and two assists.

Fort Recovery is just two victories away from winning its first MAC title since 1999, when it advanced all the way to the state championship game.

Brian Heitkamp led Marion Local, which shot just 38 percent compared to 58 percent for the Indians, with 14 points. Travis Winner added 11 points and six rebounds.

Junior varsity

The Indians were hurt by turnovers as they fell 49-45 to Marion Local.

Fort Recovery, which trailed by one at halftime, gave the ball away 13 times compared to just six turnovers for the Flyers. Jared Kahlig led the Tribe with 13 points, and Jacob Schoen followed with 11.

Marcus Prenger and Alex Rosenbeck each had 11 points for Marion Local.[[In-content Ad]]
