Fort scores 61 in first half (08/29/2008)

FRHS football

NORTHWOOD, Ohio - In its relatively short football history, it's safe to say the Fort Recovery Indians never had a game - and especially a first half - like this one.

The Indians, scoring early and often, put up a school-record 67 points Friday night against the Cardinal Stritch Cardinals.

Fort Recovery, off to a 2-0 start for only the second time since beginning a full-time Midwest Athletic Conference schedule, scored an amazing nine touchdowns in the opening two quarters then cruised to a 67-32 victory as the Indians' substitutes got plenty of second half playing time

The offensive stat lines for many of the Indians' starters were jaw-dropping.

There was junior quarterback Greg Kahlig, who completed 20-of-24 pass attempts for 308 yards and four touchdowns, and also carried the ball for 94 yards.

And then there was senior Frank Thien, who had six receptions for 106 yards and three TD receptions. Thien, who scored three TDs in the Indians' season-opening win last week, added a rushing touchdown and threw for a score for good measure.

Matt Braun was also a workhorse on the ground for FRHS, picking up 116 yards on 17 carries, along with three touchdowns.

The Indians put up 34 points in the first quarter and added 27 more in the second as they took a 61-6 advantage. A third quarter touchdown set a school record. The previous record was 65 in a shutout victory in 1996 against Mississinawa Valley.

Other stat stars for Fort Friday included Craig Tobe (six catches, 88 yards, one TD), Nathan Keller (three catches, 32 yards, one TD), Cody Fiely (two catches, 51 yards, one TD), and Nathan Keller (one rush, 53 yards).

The Indians, who open conference play Friday at Anna, racked up 636 yards on 76 offensive plays against Cardinal Stritch while picking up 31 first downs.

The host Cardinals, who play their games at Northwood High School, had 300 yards on 47 plays, with 10 first downs.
