Fort seeks grant for park items (06/22/04)
FORT RECOVERY — Village council members here are seeking a $10,000 grant for picnic tables, benches and trash bins made out of recycled products.
The Community Recycling and Litter Prevention Fund grant is available through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and administered through the Mercer County Solid Waste District, Fort Recovery village administrator Randy Diller said at Monday’s council meeting.
The village will pay an approximately $3,300 match if it is chosen to receive the approximately $6,700 grant, Diller added.
The grant funds would be used to purchase numerous picnic tables, benches, trash bins for the village’s parks and a sign for Ambassador Park.
The grant application will be submitted to the solid waste district by the July 2 deadline.
The village received approximately $10,000 through this grant program in 2001.
In other business, the council discussed the schedule for the upcoming sidewalk project on Milligan and Harrison streets.
Diller said Monday he plans to advertise for construction bids this week. Bids are scheduled to be opened on Tuesday, July 13, at 11 a.m. (Ohio time) at village hall.
Council members plan to accept a bid at their Monday, July 19 meeting, and construction is set to be completed by Monday, Sept. 20.
This project, which will construct sidewalks and add lighting on those streets, is expected to cost approximately $42,000. Construction of the sidewalks is being funded by the owners of the property where the sidewalks are being placed. The lighting portion of the project is being paid by the village.
Also Monday, council members:
•Voted to have village attorney David Bruns draft a resolution for a new storm water control levy. The town’s current five-year tax levy will expire at the end of 2004.
The new $2.5 million five-year levy will generate about $47,000 a year for use on projects to correct storm water drainage problems in the village, Diller said.
•Heard a report from Fort Recovery Police Chief Maggie Hartings on the new decals placed on the department’s two police cruisers. She told the council the work went about $250 over budget on the $1,000 project because the decals that were on one of the cars had to be professionally removed.
•Heard a report from Diller on the project to replace water and sanitary sewer lines on Gwendolyn and West Center streets.
“The entire project should cost about $45,000 for materials and labor,” Diller said, adding the project is set to start in July.
•Accepted resolutions to transfer $4,500 to the water debt fund from the water revenue fund; $3,500 to the industrial park debt fund from the income tax fund; and $2,750 to the Hickory Circle Debt Fund from the income tax fund.
•Heard Hartings report that the village’s Harvest Jubilee went “real smooth.”
•Canceled the council’s Monday, July 5 meeting. The next council meeting will be Monday, July 19.[[In-content Ad]]
