Fort students charged with making threats (04/11/06)

By By BETH A. CLAYTON-

Three Fort Recovery High School students who were arrested last week for allegedly threatening other students were released to their parents after their arraignment Friday morning in Mercer County juvenile court, Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney Andy Hinders said today.

According to superintendent David Riel, the students are ordered to attend special classes outside the district and will continue to attend those classes for the time being.

The students were arrested Tuesday, April 4, as part of an investigation that began in late March when rumors began circulating in the community about students making threats to other students, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey told The Daily Standard (Celina, Ohio).

The students, two freshmen and a sophomore, have been charged with inducing panic.

In a letter which was sent home to parents of Fort Recovery students today, superintendent Riel said, “These three students were charged for actions that resulted from an environment not uncommon in high schools all across our country. ... We have countless reports that these students, and others I might add, have been the subject of teasing and verbal assaults by other Fort Recovery students over the past several years.”

“It is important to remember that these students were arrested based on things they said, nothing else. There were no weapons, no hit lists, nothing else,” Riel said this morning.

Grey told The Daily Standard he received a phone call March 25 concerning rumors about the threats and contacted Fort Recovery Police, Riel and high school principal Ed Snyder.

Grey said the sheriff’s department became actively involved on March 29, and a search of the high school was conducted on March 30 by officers from Allen and Mercer County and a team of K-9 dogs, but nothing significant was found.

All students were out of the building at the time attending a mandatory abstinence education program at Coldwater High School.

Riel and Hinders said today both said that they were unaware of any additional developments.

In his letter, Riel also emphasized that these students are innocent until proven guilty and urged residents not to speculate about what “they may or may not have done.”

Two of the students were arrested while walking to school and the third was pulled over and arrested while driving. All three were taken to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department where their parents were contacted.

In response to the events, Riel said he put together a task force including mental health professionals, school and law enforcement officials, which met Monday to discuss short- and long-term plans to improve student interaction.

Riel said parents are urged to maintain communication with their children and to contact the school with safety concerns.

A meeting sponsored by the F.O.R.T. (Focus on Responsible Teens) group will be held Tuesday, April 25, at 8 p.m. in the high school commons for parents to discuss teasing and bullying and the effect it has on students.[[In-content Ad]]
