Fort students ready for exam (9/22/04)

FORT RECOVERY — Sophomores here are getting ready for the Ohio Graduation Test.

School board members learned Tuesday that in March 2005, sophomores at Fort Recovery High School will take the OGT for the first time. They will be tested on reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies.

The members of the class of 2007 will be the first who must pass the test in order to graduate from high school.

Practice tests will be administered to sophomores next week.

This test, prepared by the Ohio Department of Education, will replace the Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency Test. Unlike the proficiency test, the OGT will include multiple choice, short answer and extended response questions.

If students fail the test, they will have additional chances to retake it before they graduate.

Students were field tested OGT questions in 2002, and sophomores in March 2003 and 2004 were tested in reading and mathematics.

Also Tuesday, Fort Recovery Middle School principal Ted Shuttleworth reported that middle and high school students will receive two safety identification cards with their school pictures from Lifetouch National School Studios Inc.

This year, even if the student doesn’t order school pictures, they will receive the ID cards. These free cards, containing their picture, age and description will be given to the parents for use in case of an emergency or if the child is missing.

Each card will be printed with a toll free number for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. With the parents’ permission, the personal information and photo could be released by the center to law enforcement agencies nationwide during an emergency.

These cards are not available to elementary students because they use a different photography studio for school pictures.

In other business, board members:

•Heard Riel report that Fort Recovery schools were given an excellent rating on the Ohio Department of Education State Report Card for the sixth straight year.

•Heard elementary school principal Nancy Knapke report on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, a set of standardized measures of early literacy development.

DIBELS is a short fluency test used to monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills at the elementary school level, Knapke said.

DIBELS may be administered one to three times a year to students in second or third grades.

•Voted to authorized Fort Recovery schools treasurer Dennis Ontrop and Fort Recovery superintendent David Riel to begin negotiations for a new preferred provider organization dental plan with employees.

“There is not a big savings for the board, but employees will benefit (from the proposed plan),” Ontrop said during Tuesday’s meeting.

•Heard about a new program planned for middle school students from Shuttleworth.

The new study table program, which encourages students to complete assigned homework on time, has not been introduced to parents or students, Shuttleworth said.

If middle school students fail to turn in a homework assignment on the third day after it is due they will attend study table for 35 minutes after school to work on the assigned homework.

•Heard that eligible FRHS juniors and seniors will be inducted into the National Honors Society during a Thursday, Nov. 18 ceremony.

•Heard that homecoming will be held on Friday, Oct. 8.

•Approved a trip for 18 FRHS FFA members to the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky. from Monday, Oct. 25 to Saturday, Oct. 30.

•Acknowledged FRHS students Marisa Minor and Tiera Judy and FRHS graduate Lana Ranly for their success in the 2004 Miss Lake Festival Pageant.

•Approved Steve Stone to serve as the corporation’s representative on the Tri Star Advisory Council.

•Approved a recommendation to hire Michael Schwieterman as a classified substitute in a non-teaching position, Rick Kremer as a volunteer girls basketball coach, C.J. Tobe as a boys basketball freshman coach and Scott Brunswick as a volunteer boys basketball coach.

•Will meet again on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. (Ohio time.)[[In-content Ad]]
