ANSONIA, Ohio — The Indians got a break between state-ranked opponents Monday.

Fort Recovery’s volleyball team used 11-1 runs in the first and third games and an 11-0 run to open the second game as it thumped the Ansonia Tigers 25-19, 25-10, 25-14.

“I thought my kids took care of business tonight,” said FRHS coach Jackie Briscoe, whose team played Division III No. 1 Versailles Thursday and visits Division III No. 16 Anna today. “I thought that at times we let down, but all-in-all we just came in focused, knew what we had to do and took care of business.”

The Tribe trailed 3-2 in the opening game against Ansonia, but took off after Tiff Gaerke turned in one of her 14 kills.

The first of the team’s three 11-point runs included two more kills by Gaerke, one each from Lauren Wenning and Julie Link, a Holly Stein block and a Gaerke ace. It surged the Indians to a 13-4 lead, which they never relinquished.

Rachel Stahl got Fort Recovery off to a hot start in game two. She served the first 11 points of the game, which included a pair of aces and two kills and a block from Gaerke.

The Tigers (7-5) stuck around for a while in the third game, trailing just 14-13 after senior Lisa Goubeaux turned in back-to-back kills. However, the Indians ran away again, finishing the match with an 11-1 run capped by a pair of Brittany Brackman aces.

“Fort Recovery is always pretty tough,” said Ansonia coach Mindy Walters. “In the first game, for the mental errors we had, I thought we hung with them pretty well. (In the) second game we just shut down communication-wise and we weren’t moving on the floor at all. (In the) third game we held with them for a good long time there.”

Ansonia was limited offensively, getting just team highs of seven kills from Goubeaux and six assists from Lana Walters. Brianne Clymer had a pair of aces.

“(Gaerke) is an excellent hitter,” Walters added. “We had a hard time reading her. Blockers couldn’t really get there. Our defense wasn’t quite on their toes like they should have been, but I didn’t think we did a bad job against them.”

Gaerke posted a team-high six blocks to go with her 14 kills. She was second on the team in points and digs with 11 and seven respectively.

Post totaled 16 assists and 11 points, and Stahl also notched 11 points. Abby Niekamp had 10 assists, and Wenning and Kelly Link each finished with six kills.

Kristen Schwieterman posted a team-best eight digs, and Stein had four blocks.

The Indians used their full lineup, getting digs from 11 different players in the contest and points from 10.

“I got a lot of kids in tonight, and they did a great job,” said Briscoe. “We mixed it up some and had some different people in the lineup.”

The Tribe (7-3) dropped from 17th to 19th in this week’s Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Division IV poll despite taking Division III No. 1 Versailles to five games Thursday.

The team’s only other losses this season came against Division IV No. 1 Sidney Lehman Catholic and Division IV No. 5 Old Fort.

“We’re making improvements, but we still have a ways to go,” said Briscoe of the way her team has played against top competition. “We’re going in the right direction. Basically we need to figure out how to minimize our errors. If we minimize our errors we’ll be a stronger team. I think it’s slowly coming.”

Fort Recovery stumbled in the second game, but recovered in the third to stay undefeated with a 25-12, 23-25, 15-6 victory over Ansonia Monday.

The Indians dominated the first game, but fell behind in the second game and couldn’t quite dig out of their seven-point deficit. However, they rolled out to a 9-3 lead in the third and final game. They finished on a 4-0 run, ending the match on consecutive aces by Beth May.

Sarah Braun paced Fort Recovery (7-0) with eight kills and four blocks. She also had seven digs.

Heather Schmackers had 14 assists and nine points, Joanna Snyder finished with 11 points and three kills and Kinsey Wenning totaled 13 digs and three kills.

Angie Wenning had five aces, and May finished with four.[[In-content Ad]]
