FORT RECOVERY — The Tribe took its first loss Friday. It wasn’t about to turn around and hand the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks their first win a night later.
Fort Recovery’s boys basketball team rebounded from a loss to Minster with a 54-26 victory over Mississinawa Valley Saturday night.
“We had talked about having our focus and having composure after (Friday) night,” said Indians’ coach Brian Patch. “This was our first double-weekend of the year. We played a hard-fought game (Friday) night. The kids were all upset with losing a tough game.”
Mississinawa Valley stayed close in the first half, but in the second Fort Recovery took out some of its frustrations from the previous evening.
Tyler Wuebker scored the opening hoop of the second half for the Indians, who proceeded to go on a 10-2 run to increase a six-point halftime lead to 29-15.
That advantage just continued to grow after Dusty Tobe nailed a 3-pointer at the 3:37 mark of the third quarter. His triple kicked off a 12-0 Tribe run, which included a 3-point play and a 3-pointer from freshman Clint Tobe, to close the quarter.
Dusty Tobe posted seven points in the quarter to go along with Clint Tobe’s six as the Indians outscored Mississinawa 22-5.
“In the first half we were a little winded maybe and didn’t get our legs under us quite as well as we had hoped,” said Patch. “We came out and held them to 13 points in the second half and did a pretty good job with our effort.”
Dusty Tobe was one of two Tribe players in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
Sean Kahlig, who scored the first seven Fort Recovery points of the game, finished with 12 points. He also grabbed six rebounds.
Clint Tobe had nine points as he finished 2-for-2 from 3-point range, Ryan Staugler had seven points and Wuebker scored six. Wuebker also had a team-best eight rebounds.
Mississinawa Valley (0-7) had dreams of its first win of the season as it stuck with the Indians early. The game was tied after the Blackhawks scored the final five points of the first quarter, and remained close at the half before Fort Recovery went wild in the third quarter.
Patch said while his team struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first half — it shot 29 percent — it was the ball-handling and defense which kept it in control.
“Obviously that’s the key in every game,” he said of the defense, which caused 21 turnovers and limited Mississinawa Valley to 23 percent shooting for the game. “That’s something we pride ourselves on and try do a good job with.”
The Indians, who committed just 11 turnovers, are already closing in on last season’s win total (six). Thanks to the Christmas holiday they get 11 days off between games before hosting Lincolnview Thursday, Dec. 30.
The Blackhawks were unable to reach double figures in any quarter, and had no player score in double digits in the game. Kyle Linder led the team with seven points, and Wes Gelhaus and Josh Setser each added six.
Setser led the team with seven rebounds.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery scored the only three points of the extra session to win an unusually heated junior varsity contest over Mississinawa Valley, 33-30 in overtime.
Lucas Staugler scored the only field goal of the overtime period on a put-back with 47 seconds remaining. A Tony Diller free throw gave the Tribe a 3-point lead with 20 seconds left, and Ryan Dickey’s 3-pointer in the closing minutes was no good for the Blackhawks.
The victory came after a big comeback by the Indians as they rallied from a nine-point deficit to tie the contest on a put-back hoop by Matt Thobe at the third-quarter buzzer. Both teams scored just four points in the fourth quarter before Fort Recovery won it in overtime, with fans from both sides roaring disapproval at the officials during the final 11 minutes because of a bunch of highly questionable calls.
Thobe was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field as he led the Indians with nine points. He also grabbed six rebounds.
Diller followed with eight points, 10 rebounds and eight steals, and Staugler had six points.
Tracy Harris led Mississinawa Valley with nine points and six rebounds. Levi Wicker scored seven points.[[In-content Ad]]
