Fort tops Bulldogs for third straight win (02/02/05)
FRHS girls basketball
CELINA, Ohio — The Indians have a chance to get on a roll just at the right time.
Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team won its third straight game Tuesday, fighting off the host Celina Bulldogs for a 54-46 triumph.
It could match last year’s win total (15) by taking its final three regular-season games — against New Bremen, Lima Central Catholic and Parkway — with a chance to improve on that mark in the state tournament.
The Indians (12-5) shot 46 percent in the first half Tuesday, leading 27-20 at the break. But, Celina clawed back, eventually tying the game early in the fourth quarter.
The Tribe responded with a 5-0 run and hit enough free throws down the stretch for complete the victory.
Sophomore Holly Stein paced the Indians for the second straight game, scoring half of her team-high 16 points from the free-throw line. Senior Krystal Rammel added 11 points, and sophomore Tiff Gaerke also reached double figures as she shot 4-of-5 from the field for 10.
Stein and Rammel shared the team high of nine rebounds as Fort Recovery held a 38-22 advantage on the glass. Gaerke added seven rebounds, and Sara Fortkamp grabbed six.
Megan Wenning added eight points, and Stein finished with three steals. Vicki Roessner dished out four assists, and Gaerke had a pair of blocks.
Laura Link paced the Bulldogs (5-12) with 20 points. She was their lone player to reach double digits, and she also grabbed five rebounds.
Betsy Hone added nine points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery dominated the JV contest for a 41-21 victory over Celina.
Jill Pottkotter set the pace for the Indians with 12 points, and Sam Staugler added nine. Brittany Brackman and Lauren Wenning added six points apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
