Fort tops 'Cats for second victory (09/08/07)
FRHS football
FORT RECOVERY - The Indians have been waiting for this for a long time.
For four consecutive season's, the Fort Recovery High School football team has never had more than a single win. Now, thanks to a successful 2-minute drill for a Greg Kahlig touchdown and a 19-15 victory over the visiting Minster Wildcats, they do.
The Indians trailed 15-13 Friday night when they took over the ball at their own 19-yard line with just two minutes on the clock. But Kahlig, Fort Recovery's sophomore quarterback, moved the home team down the field.
Following a 5-yard penalty he completed a 7-yard pass, and then on third-and-8 found Bobby Rammel with a 51-yard strike. A couple of Kahlig runs and another shot pass to Metzger pushed the Indians inside the red zone, and Kahlig lifted them to the lead on a 9-yard scoring run with just 38 seconds left on the clock.
The Tribe's 2-point conversion attempt failed, but Minster quarterback Brian Mueller missed on all four of his desperation pass attempts on the ensuing drive as Fort Recovery ended a 12-game Midwest Athletic Conference losing streak.
Kahlig and Frank Thien shared the passing duties, and handled all of the scoring along with former starting quarterback Toby Metzger.
Thien opened the scoring for the Indians with a 1-yard TD run early in the second quarter, and the extra-point from Mark Mattraw tied the game at seven. Fort Recovery pulled in front when Kahlig hit Metzger with a 61-yard touchdown pass with 1:36 remaining in the first half.
Minster reclaimed the lead thanks to a third-quarter safety and a 1-yard touchdown run by Ian Ranly less than 1:30 into the final period. But with the game on the line Kahlig led the Indians back to victory.
The sophomore finished 4-of-10 passing for 125 yards, and Thien was 6-for-13 for 53 yards. Metzger and Rammel each topped 70 yards receiving with three catches apiece.
Thien finished with 44 yards on 11 rushing attempts, and Michael Trobridge had three carries for 47 yards.
Ty Whitford led Minster on the ground with 15 carries for 77 yards, and Ranly rushed 12 times for 76 yards. Brian Mueller completed just 5-for-14 passes for 46 yards.
Fort Recovery, which has not won more than two games in a season since going 4-6 in 2000, will seek its third win of 2007 when it visits Versailles Friday.[[In-content Ad]]
