Fort turns down state funds (02/21/07)
Fort Recovery School Board
By By JENNIFER TARTER-
FORT RECOVERY - School board members here voted Monday night to decline the $1.3 million offered by the state to renovate or rebuild school facilities for at least one year.
The $1.3 million, offered by The Ohio Schools Facilities Commission, was determined by the number of students that will attend the school district during the next 10 years, Fort Schools superintendent David Riel said.
"We plan to reevaluate a strategy," Riel said Tuesday, adding that the board considered that there was not an overwhelming consensus leaning towards one of the five building options discussed at the final community engagement meeting held on Feb. 12.
More than 85 community members at the Feb. 12 meeting discussed whether to accept the state funding and one of the five reconstruction options, created by members of the community during previous meetings.
Riel said Tuesday that 55 percent of community members at the Feb. 12 meeting voted for the first construction option at a cost of $11.4 million. This option would fund the demolition of 29,341-square-feet of the former high school building and renovate 61,876-square-feet of the school.
Options two and three drew just over 20 percent of the votes each. Option two has a $11.9 price tag and option 3 would cost $8.1 million.
Also Monday, Riel reported on Project Lead the Way. On Friday, students will attend one of four sessions at Sinclair College in Dayton, Ohio. Students will take part in several technology and engineering opportunities.
In other business, board members:
•Voted that Kathy Jutte, Brian Patch, Ted Shuttleworth and David Riel will serve as chaperones for the eighth grade trip to Washington D.C. from April 1 to 6.
•Voted to employ Christopher Summer as the FRHS head track coach, Travis Heitkamp as the FRHS assistant track coach, Zebulon Sutton as the junior high track coach, Jodi Staugler as the junior high assistant track coach and Marie Osterholt as the head softball coach. Board members also accepted Jason Grieshop as an volunteer track coach.
•Will meet again on March 13 at 7:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
