FRHS girls basketball
NEW KNOXVILLE, Ohio — Sara Fortkamp was playing so well she hardly stepped off the floor.
She played 29 of the 32 minutes, scoring a career-high 16 points to lead the Indian girls basketball team to a 50-29 thrashing of the New Knoxville Rangers.
Fortkamp shot 7-of-11 from the field and made her only 3-point attempt, helping pick the Indians up from 23 percent shooting in the first half to 44 in the second.
She shared team highs in assists (4) and steals (3) and was one off the game-high pace with seven rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end.
Fortkamp’s effort was typical of the Tribe (10-5, 4-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) on the night as it dominated every phase of the game.
It out-rebounded the Rangers 39-21, caused 17 turnovers while only committing 10 and held the home team to 18 percent shooting in the first half and 28 percent for the game. New Knoxville (5-4, 2-2) was limited to five points in the second quarter, and six in the first and fourth.
Holly Stein followed Fortkamp with 13 points for Fort Recovery, which led 21-11 at halftime and finished off the game with 18 fourth-quarter points. Krystal Rammel, who returned after missing two games with an illness, added 10 points.
Vicki Roessner grabbed eight rebounds, Rammel and Tiff Gaerke matched Fortkamp with seven and Stein added six. Roessner shared the team-high of four assists, and joined Stein and Fortkamp with three steals.
Kara Katterheinrich and Carrie Gabel each had five points, which was tops on the New Knoxville squad. Kendal Bertsch and Nicole Wright added four apiece. Gabel had six rebounds, and Wright finished with five.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery dropped the JV contest 45-39 thanks to New Knoxville’s 35 trips to the free-throw line.
The Indians lost despite shooting 39 percent from the field compared to just 24 percent for New Knoxville. The Rangers connected on 24 of their 35 free throws, while Fort Recovery’s Jill Pottkotter was perfect from the line as she accounted for all of her team’s six attempts.
The Indians managed just four points in the second quarter to trail 21-18 at the half. They pulled within one with a quarter to play, but were outscored 16-11 in the final period.
Pottkotter and Sam Staugler shared the team-high of eight points for the Tribe, and Val Fortkamp scored six. Staugler and Niekamp each grabbed six rebounds, and Pottkotter added five.
Niekamp had three assists and two blocks, and Brittany Brackman and Sandra Sudhoff each had two steals.
