Fort's Gaerke totals 20 kills

Fort Recovery High School graduate set a career high in kills Friday at the Michigan/adidas Invitational.

Gaerke (FRHS - 2007) racked up 20 kills as the University of Dayton volleyball team knocked off Oregon State in five games in their first match of the tournament. The win was the 10th in a row to open the year for the Flyers.

In the victory, the junior also had 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. She added one assist.

Dayton suffered its first loss of the 2009 Saturday by a 28-26, 26-24, 28-26 count to sixth-ranked Michigan. Gaerke had eight digs, seven kills and two blocks in the loss.

And in the final game of the invitational Gaerke totaled 10 kills, three digs, two blocks and an assist as Dayton lost in five games to Marquette.

She ranks second on the team this season in kills (127), points (153) and aces (15). She is third for the Flyers (10-2) in digs with 100.

Alyssa Johnson

Jay County - 2006

Led the Taylor University women's cross country team Friday at the Little State Meet hosted by Indiana State University.

Johnson finished 11th among Little State competitors (teams from NCAA Divisions II and III and the NAIA) and 43rd overall in 19 minutes, 43 seconds.

The Trojans placed third out of the 14 small schools and 11th out of 22 teams overall.

Maddie Moore

South Adams - 2009

Helped the Bluffton University women's soccer team to one of its three second-half goals Saturday in a 3-0 victory over Thiel.

Moore was in the middle of a scoring flurry for the Beavers, who got their first goal at 52:49 mark. She assisted on a goal by Kourtney Lewis less than a minute later, and two minutes after that Bluffton added its third tally.

The freshman is tied for the team lead with three assists in six games and has also scored one goal.

Frank Thien

Fort Recovery - 2009

Got on the field on special teams Saturday in the seventh-ranked Ohio Northern University football team's 30-10 loss to NCAA Division III No. 1 Mount Union.

After Mount Union took a took a 7-3 lead early in the second quarter, Thien returned the ensuing kickoff 10 yards.

Joseph Vormohr

Jay County - 2006

Started at center for the Hanover College football team Saturday in its 42-21 loss to Butler.

Hanover picked up 132 rushing yards behind Vormohr and his teammates on the offensive line.[[In-content Ad]]
