Collegiate Check-up

Local athletes put their mark on conference championship track meets.

The best of the bunch was Holly Stein, who won a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference titles en route to being named the Most Outstanding Women's Freshman Athlete as well as the Most Outstanding Women's Field Athlete.

Jay County graduates Joseph Vormohr and Ian and Mitchell Thomas also competed in the HCAC meet, while former Patriot teammates Alyssa Johnson and Jill Roughia took part in the Mid-Central Conference Championships.

Stein (Fort Recovery - 2007) was dominant for Defiance College in the javelin as the only competitor to have a throw beyond 100 feet. She took the event by nine feet with a launch of 108 feet, 2 inches.

The freshman also won the HCAC title in the discus with a throw of 130 feet event. She added a runner-up effort in the shot put at 39 feet, ¼ inch.

Johnson (Jay County - 2006), a sophomore at Taylor University, also earned a conference championship in the MCC. She took the lead in the 1,500-meter run with about two laps to go and held off Emily LaSala of Indiana Wesleyan to win in 4-minutes, 48.88 seconds.

She also competed in a pair of relays, teaming with Becky Hegelin, Alyssa Hartman and Winchester graduate Tabitha Bogue for fifth in the 4x800 in 10:24.25 and Hegelein, Vanessa Fereshetian and Kelsey Randall for seventh at 4:19.89 in the 4x400.

Roughia (Jay County - 2005) added a runner-up effort at the MCC meet, finishing just over two seconds back of Grace's Amy Misak in the 3,000 steeplechase in 12:18.36. She also competed in three relays for Huntington University, joining Bethany McGraw, Lauren Davenport and Josann Schoeff for third in the 4x400 in 4:09.41.

The junior teamed with Davenport, Laura Bowman and Lindsay Bowman for fourth in the 4x800 relay in 10:21.37 and Lauren Bowman, Joanna Stebing and Bradie Vance for ninth in the 4x100 at 1:01.99.

Vormohr (Jay County - 2006) turned in a runner-up result as well. The sophomore at Hanover College recorded a toss of 144 feet, 9 inches for second place in the discus.

He was also ninth in the shot put at 43 feet, 6½ inches.

Twin brothers Ian and Mitchell Thomas (Jay County - 2005) each competed in the 5,000 and 10,000 runs for Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at the HCAC meet.

Ian turned in the better finish in both races, placing third in the 10,000 in 33:57.94 and fourth in the 5,000 with a time of 15:44.53. Mitchell was seventh in the 10,000 (34:53.19) and ninth in the 5,000 (16:12.04).

Diamond meeting

A pair of area graduates met Tuesday evening, with Heath Williams (Jay County - 2004) leading his Manchester University baseball team to a 14-6 win over Tyler Sprunger (South Adams - 2004) and Bluffton University.

Williams had just one hit in the contest, but scored four times and drove in a run as Manchester took control with a nine-run sixth inning. He also had a stolen base.

Sprunger struggled on the hill, giving up four runs on two hits and a walk without recording an out. He also pitched April 25 in a 14-12 loss to Transylvania, giving up two runs on two walks in two-thirds of an inning.

For the year, Williams leads Manchester with eight stolen bases. He is second on the squad with 25 runs.

Sprunger is 2-2 with a save in 14 relief appearances.
