Foundation awards scholarships to college students (09/14/06)
A dozen local college students will be receiving scholarships announced today by The Portland Foundation.
Though most of the foundation's scholarships go to graduating seniors from Jay County High School, this latest round is aimed at students already pursuing higher education.
Natalie Hosier and Matthew Knoth have been named the 2006 recipients of the Dr. Ara C. and Gay B. Badders Medical Scholarships.
Natalie, the daughter of Bruce and Debra Hosier of Portland, will receive $2,000 per semester for four semesters. Now beginning her first year of pharmacy school at Butler University, she is expected to have her doctor of pharmacy degree in the spring of 2008 and plans to return to the Jay County area to work as a pharmacist.
Matthew, the son of Richard and Priscilla Knoth of Bryant, is in his second year of pharmacy school at Purdue and plans to graduate in May of 2009 with a doctorate of pharmacy. He will receive $2,000 per semester for two semesters.
Adam Brandt, the son of Bill and Beth Brandt of Portland, has been named the 2006 recipient of the Marseal T. Deweerd, Edith T. Horn, and Virgie M. Brady Memorial Scholarship. He is studying building construction management at Purdue University. The scholarship is for $400.
Four students will receive $500 each as recipients of the John Jay Center for Learning Scholarships. They are Tressa Hemmelgarn of Portland, who is studying nursing; Rex Pinkerton of Portland, who is studying education administration and supervision; Katherine Roessner of Portland, who is studying business management; and Vicki Schuhmacher of Pennville, who is studying business management.
Recipients of the Alwyn Carder Scholarships will receive $750 per semester for up to four semesters. The scholarships were established in 2004 by the late Alwyn Carder for students pursuing a degree in architecture, history, or education. This is the first year the scholarships have been awarded.
