Foundation OK's grants (03/04/08)
Teacher Creativity Mini-Grants totaling $4,250 have been approved by the board of The Portland Foundation for 17 projects in local schools in the first half of 2008.
The mini-grants of $250 or less help cover the costs of learning experiences outside the budget of individual schools. The program is funded by the Virgil and Josephine Thomas Educational Fund, a component of the foundation.
Here's a breakdown of mini-grants by school:
•Bloomfield Elementary School - $250 to Sandy Colquhoun to create a special reading nook for pre-schoolers.
•East Elementary School - $250 to Kathy6 Ayers to purchase materials for a woven cloth basket project.
•East Elementary School - $250 to Sandy Colquhoun to create a special reading nook for pre-schoolers.
•East Jay Middle School - $250 to Jan Donathon to help students with learning disabilities understand themselves better by using the book "Thank You Mr. Faulkner" and guest speakers.
•East Jay Middle School - $250 to Pete Vogler to help pay for a marimba for the East Jay Band.
•Jay County Christian Academy - $250 to Kelly Bricker to help pay for a field trip by fifth and sixth grade to Chicago.
•Jay County Christian Academy - $250 to Kay Corle to help purchase items to build a children's garden.
•Jay County Christian Academy - $250 to Janay Mace to help pay for a field trip by fifth and sixth grade to Chicago.
•Jay County Christian Academy - $250 to Jerry Nichols to purchase tuning forks, a VanDeGraf generator, prisms, lenses, and a magnet.
•Jay County Christian Academy - $250 to purchase supplies and materials for a Mini-Exchange City.
•Jay County High School - $250 to Devon Lykins to acquire currencies from foreign countries for use in social studies classrooms.
•Jay County High School - $250 to Annemarie McClung to help pay for a German folk dancing workshop.
•Jay County High School - $250 to Margaret Ralph to help pay for a field trip to the Indiana Repertory Theatre's production of "A Christmas Carol."
•Jay County High School - $250 to Kelly Smeltzer to purchase various sound effects apparatus for the 2008 marching band season.
•Jay County High School - $250 to Pete Vogler to help hire dance instructor Jessica Daniels as an artist-in-residence for a dance and choreography class at JCHS.
•Pennville Elementary School - $250 to Virginia Fennig to help pay for a field trip to Indianapolis.
•Redkey Elementary School - $250 to LaVetha Loucks to help purchase percussion instruments for music classes.
A total of 28 proposals were submitted, seeking a total of $7,000.
The next Teacher Mini-Grant application deadline is Aug. 1.
