Fourth-quarter run lifts FR (01/11/08)

FRHS girls basketball

ST. HENRY, Ohio - The Fort was ready for the fourth.

Trailing by two heading into the final period Thursday night, the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team responded with a 12-0 run. The St. Henry Redskins got back within three points with 1:30 to play, but the Indians held on for their third straight win, 52-46.

The Tribe's spurt to start the fourth quarter was truly a team effort, with six different players each contributing a hoop.

Nicole Pottkotter, who led Fort Recovery with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, tied the game 53 seconds into the fourth quarter, and Kelsey Wuebker put the Tribe ahead for good just 31 seconds later. Anne Koesters added a jumper, and then Kendra Brunswick and Joanna Snyder buried back-to-back 3-pointers for a 47-37 Indian lead.

After St. Henry pulled back within 49-46, Pottkotter extended the Tribe advantage back to five points with 1:10 left. She added a late free throw for her team-high scoring total.

Chelsey Leuthold followed Pottkotter with nine points for the Indians (8-4, 4-1 Midwest Athletic Conference), who trailed by one after the first quarter, three at halftime and two after the third. Joanna Snyder added eight points to the balanced FRHS scoring attack.

Snyder, a junior, had a big game all around, adding nine rebounds, eight steals and three assists. Annie Koesters (six points) also grabbed nine boards, and Leuthold had six assists.

Fort Recovery overcame a massive effort from St. Henry's Brooke Mattingly, who scored half of her team's points. She finished 7-of-14 from the field and 9-of-12 from the line with 18 rebounds (six offensive) and four steals.

However, St. Henry (1-10, 1-4 MAC) shot just 28 percent for the game overall, with the remainder of the squad going 10-of-47 (21 percent). Chelsea Mestemaker followed Mattingly with eight points and eight rebounds, and Shelby Busher had five assists.
