FORT RECOVERY - The Rangers have won 40 straight games.
They've won 68 in a row in the regular season.
They had beaten five straight opponents by double digits.
And they happen to be the top-ranked team in Division IV and the defending state champions.
Friday night, the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team shrugged off that resume, pushing New Knoxville in a way it has not been pushed all season. But by the end of three overtimes the visiting Rangers were able to survive, defeating the Indians 73-64.
After New Knoxville (13-0, 5-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) missed game-winning chances at the end of regulation and each of the first overtimes, the game was tied again for the 23rd time when the Indian's Greg Kahlig scored with 3:08 to go in the third extra session. But Austin Arnett hit a pair of free throws 23 seconds later to give the Rangers the lead for good.
Frank Thien split a pair of foul shots to pull the Tribe within one, but Austin Arnett scored to push New Knoxville's lead to three. The next three Fort Recovery possessions resulted in a turnover and a pair of missed 3-pointers as the visitors extended their lead to put the game away.
Brad Piehl scored 31 points, including 20-of-24 from the free-throw line, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Rangers. Arnett added 19 points and six boards.
New Knoxville won all seven of its tournament games last season by double digits. It has not lost a game since falling 60-57 on March 16, 2007, in the regional championship to Georgetown, and its last regular-season loss came Feb. 10, 2006, against St. Henry.
The game was an offensive showdown in the first half, with Fort Recovery shooting 55 percent and the Rangers 50. Frank Thien's hoop at the buzzer game the Tribe a 31-29 lead.
But it changed significantly in the second half, as both teams dipped below 30 percent from the field.
Greg Kahlig poured in 34 points, including a 12-for-12 effort at the foul line for Fort Recovery (9-4, 2-3 MAC). He also shared the game-high of 12 rebounds with senior teammate Toby Metzger.
Craig Tobe, who hit a pair of key 3-pointers in the final four minutes of regulation, added 16 points. Metzger also had six assists.
Junior varsity
The extra sessions were not kind overall to the Indians as the junior varsity team also went beyond regulation to lose 39-35 to New Knoxville in overtime.
Fort Recovery had a chance to take the win at the end of the fourth quarter, but had a shot blocked just before the buzzer. The Tribe also had the ball trailing by two with 11.4 seconds left, but turned it over when the officials ruled Shane Brunswick stepped out of bounds to retrieve a pass before he was fouled.
Brunswick led the Tribe with 15 points and five rebounds. Michael Gaerke added 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and six steals.
Brian Bambauer powered the Rangers with 15 points and eight rebounds. Travis Luck, Lucas Leffel and Darren Homan each added six points.
