FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery boys basketball team started strong Saturday night but couldn't finish.

The Indians saw their lead stretch to as many as 15 points during the first half, and held a 34-19 halftime advantage over the Wapakoneta Redskins. But one night after trouncing Edgerton to begin the season, Fort Recovery let the lead slip away in the second half and lost its home opener, 72-65, in triple overtime.

"Obviously, it's not nice to not win it," said FRHS coach Brian Patch. "It's a tough loss at home early on. But this is one of those things, even though it's a tough loss it doesn't end your season."

Bobby Rammel led the Tribe with 22 points in the losing effort. He shot 6-of-8 from 3-point land, added seven rebounds and provided an early spark for Fort Recovery (1-1). Clint Tobe and Tyler Jutte also pitched in 13 and 12 points respectively.

A big difference in the contest was free throws. The Redskins (1-0) took advantage of their opportunities and the Indians didn't. Wapakoneta hit over 74 percent (23-of-31) of its attempts from the charity stripe while Fort Recovery nailed just 7-of-17 (41 percent). The Indians also missed several key freebies down the stretch during and after regulation, which ended up playing a major role in the loss.

"We've really put a lot of emphasis on that in practice - shooting free throws and shooting them accurately," Wapakoneta coach Scott Minnig said. "We put a lot of pressure on our guys in practice to do that. I think it paid off for us tonight."

Despite losing a heartbreaker, Fort Recovery hopes to learn from this early-season collapse. Players believe the team's depth and experience will end up benefiting them. As conference play looms ahead, the Indians are moving on from this game, but they don't want to forget it.

"Like coach said, we can build off this," Jutte said. "It's not all negative. We can get positive stuff out of it."

The Indians will open Midwest Athletic Conference action Friday when they host Versailles.[[In-content Ad]]
