FORT RECOVERY — A fast start had the Indians looking at a chance to earn their second league win.
That opportunity quickly fell apart.
After winning six of the first seven points Tuesday, the Fort Recovery High School volleyball team gave up nine in a row. They never reclaimed the lead in a 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 loss to the Minster Wildcats.
“We ended up changing our lineup after the Celina match. It was new for the girls. So I think that played a little bit of a part in it,” said FRHS coach Kylie Huelsman, whose team dropped its third straight match. “But I feel like we just keep making the same mistakes over and over again.”
The Indians (4-8, 1-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) took advantage of Minster mistakes to take the early lead. Four of their first six points were scored on Wildcat attack errors, along with one on a service error and one on a tip by senior Kylie Kahlig.
But after running out to the 6-1 lead, Kelsey Fiely sent an attack wide right and Allison Jutte stepped back to serve for Minster. The junior ripped off eight straight points, including a pair of aces, with the help of three kills from senior middle hitter Kassi Brown.
“She did a great job staying calm and putting the ball where I was asking her to put it,” said MHS coach Cami Lefeld. “She really did a great job getting us back into the game.”
The Wildcats extended their lead to 23-14 on another kill by Brown, who finished with a match-high 19, and took the first game on a Tribe attack error.
A Kahlig kill tied the second game at 1-1, but Minster scored the next three points and led the rest of the way. The Wildcats (4-8, 1-3 MAC) built a 13-6 lead in game two and a 17-7 lead in game three on the way to the victory.
“I’m happy to come out with a 3-0 win. After last week, the girls really needed it,” said Lefeld, whose team was coming off consecutive five-game losses to Memorial (St. Mary’s) and Versailles. “They came out and played really strong and consistent.”
Sami Brown totaled nine kills for Minster, and Regan Hahn had 36 assists. Jutte finished with 16 service points, 10 digs and four aces, and Dana Stucke came up with 25 digs.
Ericka Lennartz had two of her eight kills during a rally late in the third game in which Fort Recovery closed a double-digit deficit to 19-17 before the Wildcats put the match away.
“At the end I saw a lot more communication,” said Huelsman. “I saw the people on my team that never talk and never communicate, they were coming out and communicating.
“My defense was better. … And we were staying aggressive.”
Abby Backs had 12 digs and five points for the Indians, and Kelsey Fiely and Lennartz each added nine digs. Kayla Kahlig had five blocks and four assists, and Kara Faller also notched five blocks.

Sierra Pugh served the Indians to a 6-0 lead in the deciding game and they never trailed as they finished off a 25-20, 27-29, 25-12 victory over Minster.
Pugh racked up 13 assists, nine points and two blocks for Fort Recovery (6-2, 2-2 MAC), which rolled to a 20-10 advantage in game three and eventually finished the match on a kill from Elle Schoenherr. Heather Vaughn totaled 12 digs and eight points, Hannah Kaup came up with 14 digs and Cassidy Rammel notched 10 kills.
Middle school
Fort Recovery’s teams both fell short against the Wildcats, with the eighth graders falling 25-16, 25-14 and the seventh graders losing 25-18, 7-25, 25-18.
Devin Post totaled 10 points, six kills and three assists for the seventh grade team (3-5). Carly Link, Emily Hart and Renee Kuess each had five points.
Kirsten Jutte finished with eight points and two assists for the eighth grade Indians (4-4). Kendra Siefring had three kills and a block, and Hallory Leuthold notched four digs.[[In-content Ad]]
