FR falls short in state-ranked battle (01/19/08)
FRHS boys basketball
MARIA STEIN, Ohio - For three quarters, it looked like they could stare down a fellow state-ranked team on its home court.
But during a critical four-minute stretch of a climactic fourth quarter, the Fort Recovery Indians blinked.
The Indians couldn't come all the way back after falling behind by 10 midway through the final period Friday night, falling 54-51 to the Division III No. 10 Marion Local Flyers.
Fort Recovery, which entered play Friday ranked No. 6 in Division IV, drops to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in Midwest Athletic Conference Play. The Indians play at Greenville tonight.
The host Flyers, who opened the fourth period with a 12-0 run then held off a furious and spirited FRHS comeback, are 8-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in MAC play.
Fort Recovery, which held narrow leads at the end of each of the opening three quarters, could have been forgiven for folding after Marion Local's surge to open the fourth. But the Indians rallied instead.
Less than a minute after falling behind 45-35, the Indians were back within one. Greg Kahlig, who led Fort Recovery with 20 points, dropped in a 3-pointer to start the outburst, and Bobby Rammel added a pair of triples in a 20-second span to cut Marion Local's lead to 45-44.
But the Indians couldn't tie or take the lead, as Flyers were just good enough from the free-throw line down the stretch to hold on for the win in The Hangar.
The Flyers, who were paced by Jordan Winner's 20 points, built their lead back up to five points at 49-44 after holding Fort scoreless for more than two minutes. But a Kahlig 3-pointer and a pair of free throws trimmed the margin to 50-49 with 24 seconds to play.
Marion's Troy Prenger knocked in a pair of free throws with 20 seconds on the clock to make it 52-49.
After a time-out, Fort Recovery worked the ball and settled for a layup from Clint Tobe (17 points) with just three seconds left on the clock, cutting their deficit to 52-51.
Marion Local's Alex Moeller missed the second of two free throws, but Marion got the offensive rebound, and Winner hit 1-of-2 from the line for the final margin.
Fort Recovery's Kahlig missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.
In a game that featured seven ties and seven lead changes, a key stat was second-half shooting.
Marion Local, after shooting a respectable 47 percent in the opening two periods, hit 10-of-16 attempts (63 percent) in the second half. The Indians were 9-for-24 overall in the second half (including 5-for-11 from 3-point range) and finished the game at 42 percent (20-for-48).
Marion Local also prevailed in Friday night's junior varsity game by a 41-26 margin.
Tyler Thobe led the Flyers with 10 points. Fort Recovery's leading scorer was Curtis Schroer with six.[[In-content Ad]]
