FORT RECOVERY — Mitch Stammen sprinted toward the center-field fence, turned and jumped. He came down with the ball securely in his glove, making his second big defensive play of the game.
Stammen’s catch with two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning accounted for the final out Tuesday as the Fort Recovery Indians knocked off the Celina Bulldogs 8-6 in ACME baseball.
“Skyler hit a nice shot to center field,” said Celina coach Todd Steinbrunner of his own center fielder, Skyler McCarter. “The center fielder (Stammen) made a nice play on it, otherwise it’s a tie ball game.”
Celina (2-1, 0-1 Mercer County) had already scored once in the top of the seventh inning and had runners on first and second when McCarter came to the plate with two outs. He hit a shot to center field that likely would have tied the game, but Stammen, who started in left field before moving to center, made the grab.
Stammen also snagged a line drive in center field in the fifth inning and fired home to throw out Jacob Homan for an 8-2 double play.
“Mitchell Stammen is a great athlete,” said Fort Recovery coach Jeff Wendell “He made the catch, fired it home. And Chase Bruns at home did a great job of catching the ball on the bounce and getting the tag down.”
The pitching and defense secured the win for Fort Recovery in the late innings after the Indians (3-1, 1-1 MC), rallied from a 4-0 deficit.
Celina scored four times in the top of the first inning, but the Indians immediately started fighting back. They tallied two runs apiece in each of the first two innings, three of which were unearned, and then took the lead for good in the third.
Jackson Hobbs started the third inning with an infield single, and Stammen reached base on a fielder’s choice. Kent Retz followed with an RBI single to center field to score Hobbs.
Stammen added the second Fort Recovery run of the frame on a wild pitch, and Derek Backs bunted Retz home for a 7-4 lead.
“Celina year in and year out is a tough squad. They’re well coached,” said Wendel. “The good thing is we came back and we were resilient. … I’m just very proud of the kids for fighting. … They played hard.”
The Bulldogs pulled back to within two runs twice, but missed several opportunities for big innings.
Celina had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth inning before Jacob Muhlenkamp came on in relief of Cole Wendel to retire No. 3 and 4 hitters Cody Vogel and Jimmy Luebke. And Stammen’s two defensive plays ended threats in the fifth and seventh.
“Offensively, we left too many runners on base,” said Steinbrunner. “One time we had the bases loaded with our three and four hitters up and we can’t get a run. We just needed that big hit tonight and we didn’t get it.”
Blake Boughman paced the Tribe offense as he reached base in each of his four plate appearances, finishing with three hits, two RBIs and a stolen base.
“We’re counting on him in the three hole,” said Wendel. “He’s a veteran. We expect him to do that day in and day out and he normally does.”
Cole Wendel, who also earned the win, had two hits, two walks, two runs and an RBI. Derek Backs added a single, a walk, an RBI and two runs, and Hobbs finished with two hits and a run.
Wendel and Muhlenkamp each worked 3 1/3 innings for Fort Recovery, which won despite getting out-hit 14-9. Hobbs recorded the final out for the save.
Shawn Rose suffered the loss for Celina, giving up eight runs — five earned — on seven hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Fort Recovery also played at home Monday, falling 7-2 to the Coldwater Cavaliers.
Retz suffered the loss, allowing five runs on five hits and six walks in six innings.
Muhlenkamp recorded a single, a run and an RBI to lead the Tribe offense. Boughman was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.[[In-content Ad]]
