FORT RECOVERY - In one short year, the Indians made a big leap.
The Fort Recovery High School girls track team moved from the back of the Midwest Athletic Conference pack to the upper echelon, adding 41 points to their Tuesday total to finish tied for third in the league.
Led Friday by third-place efforts from Kylie Kahlig and Holly Brunswick, who combined for three victories on the first day of the MAC Championships Tuesday, the Indians posted 76 points to finish tied with Marion Local. Versailles won the meet with 164, and Minster was second at 76.
Fort Recovery's boys finished with 28 points, to finish ahead of only New Knoxville (17) in the field of 10 teams. Minster took first place with 143.5.
Kahlig followed up her win in the shot put Tuesday with a third-place effort in the 200-meter dash for the Indian girls, who finished seventh in the MAC last season. She posted a time of 27.4 seconds, finishing one-tenth of a second ahead of fourth-place finisher Kyleigh Suchland of New Bremen.
Brunswick, the MAC long jump and high jump champion, was third in the 100 hurdles in 16.3 seconds.
Sam Tobe added a pair of fourth-place efforts Friday, narrowly missing the top three in both of her events. She was less than one second out of the No. 3 spot in the 1,600 run with a time of 5:39.2, and finished within four seconds of third in the 3,200 run at 12:41.3.
Abby May finished fifth for Fort Recovery in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.8, and Abby Huelskamp was seventh in the 800 run at 2:36.3.
The Tribe girls were also fourth in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
After getting victories from Mark Mattraw in the shot put and Aaron Vagedes in the long jump Tuesday, the Tribe boys managed to score just a single point Friday. That came from Ryan Heitkamp, who finished eighth in the 3,200 run in 10:49.9.[[In-content Ad]]
