ST. MARYS, Ohio — All three matches were within reach for the Indians Saturday. However, they were only able to come away with one victory.
The Fort Recovery High School volleyball team went 1-2 at the St. Mary’s Invitational with their lone win coming by a 25-15, 25-13 score over Bethel. They dropped their opener 25-27, 25-20, 25-16 to Allen East and then fell 25-23, 26-24 to the host Roughriders.
The Tribe (2-4) dominated Bethel in the service game in their lone victory on the day. Shelby Brunswick set the tone with eight aces as she scored 15 points. And Hannah Kaup added seven points, including four aces.
Abby Backs had 11 digs, Holly Brunswick totaled four kills and Shelby Brunswick added five assists.
Fort Recovery, which was without senior outside hitter Olivia Thien, led most of the way in its first game of the day. Allen East fought back to tie the match at 25, but kills from Holly Thien and Shelby Brunswick gave the Indians the victory.
Game two was close throughout, with FRHS grabbing a 20-18 lead on an attack error by the Mustangs to pull within five points of the victory. But Allen East roared back, putting together a 7-1 run to force a third game.
The Indians fell behind 8-3 in the third game with middle hitter Holly Brunswick on the bench with a knee injury.
They fought back to take a 13-12 advantage and Brunswick later returned to the lineup, but Allen East went on a 9-1 run to finish the match.
Fort Recovery went on to another hard-fought loss to St. Mary’s before rolling over Bethel.
Shelby Brunswick finished the tournament with 57 assists, 21 points and eight aces. Holly Brunswick had 33 digs, 17 kills and four blocks, and Ericka Lennartz totaled 24 points, 13 kills and four blocks.
Abby Backs had 40 digs, and Kylie Kahlig matched Lennartz with 13 kills. Kelsey Fiely had 10 kills, Holly Thien added eight kills and Nichole Kaiser finished with seven digs.[[In-content Ad]]
