Collegiate Check-up
It’s only natural that a finalist would take her team to the finals.
Sara Heitkamp was named a finalist for the Jostens Trophy this week. She also led her Capital women’s basketball team in scoring twice, leading the Crusaders to a berth in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament championship game.
Heitkamp, a 2002 Fort Recovery graduate, racked up 27 points Thursday in a 68-62 OAC semifinal victory over Wilmington. Division III No. 11 Capital (24-3) plays at 10th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace today for the OAC crown.
Then, in a press release Friday, the senior was announced as one of ten finalists for the Jostens Trophy. The award is given to a Division III athlete who “shows excellence in the classroom, on the playing floor and in the community.” The winner will be chosen March 15 by a national selection committee which consists of college coaches, former athletes, college administrators and selected members of the media.
In addition to her game-high scoring total against Wilmington, Heitkamp also had seven steals, six rebounds and four assists. She totaled 15 points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 59-47 opening-round victory over Wilmington Tuesday.
Jill Roughia
Jay County - 2005
She scored the only victory for the Huntington University women’s track team and qualified for national competition in the process.
Roughia’s personal-best time of 3-minutes, 8.48 seconds in the 1,000 meters gave her an easy victory by more than 13 seconds at the DePauw Indoor Classic Saturday, Feb. 18. It also met the NAIA provisional qualifying standard, which will allow her to compete at the National Indoor Track and Field Championships in March.
Tyler Niekamp
Fort Recovery - 2003
He scored two points as his Division II No. 10 Findlay University men’s basketball team improved to 23-3 with a 71-50 win over Gannon Feb. 18.[[In-content Ad]]
