GREENVILLE, Ohio - The Indians had the game in hand from the opening tip.
Fort Recovery High School's girls basketball team scored the first 11 points Saturday, led by as many as 14 in the first quarter and never allowed their lead to slip back to single digits in a 65-41 destruction of the Greenville Green Wave.
Joanna Snyder got the Indians (13-5) on the board just five seconds into the game, drilling a 3-pointer off a Nicole Pottkotter assist. Chelsey Leuthold scored on a fast break after a steal to make it 5-0, and Anne Koesters added a pair of three throws at the 6:11 mark. Two more Leuthold hoops pushed the Tribe to an 11-0 lead with just 3:02 off the clock.
Fort Recovery led by 10 after the first quarter, 14 at halftime and 19 at the end of the third period.
Snyder kept her hot-hand from long distance going, burying 3-of-4 3-pointers as she scored a game-high 20 points. Koesters added 11 points, and Leuthold scored eight of her 10 in the opening period.
The trio combined to hit 11-of-14 free throws, leading the Indians to an 18-5 scoring advantage at the foul line.
Snyder added eight rebounds and four steals, and Koesters had a pair of blocks. Pottkotter and Kelsey Wuebker grabbed eight boards apiece - Fort Recovery won the rebounding battle 47-28 - and Pottkotter also had four assists. Kinsey Wenning chipped in eight points.
Macie Blinn totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists for Greenville (7-12), which shot just 15-of-56 (27 percent). Amy Jones scored seven points, and Stephanie Jones had six boards.
Junior varsity
The Indians led by four after three quarters and held on for a 49-46 victory over Greenville.
Fort Recovery (14-4) made 16 free throws in the victory while the Green Wave sturggled to a 7-of-18 mark. The foul shooting advantage helped the Tribe overcome a 29-percent effort from the field.
Kendra Brunswick paced the Indians with game highs of 12 points and nine rebounds. Nicole Dilworth added nine points, Erika Muhlenkamp scored eight and Josie Guggenbiller had seven rebounds.
Haley Bowman finished with 12 points and six steals for the Green Wave. Aireca Hetzler had 10 points and six assists, and Jackie McCauley and Jena Studabaker totaled with six rebounds apiece.
Junior high girls
Both Fort Recovery teams advanced Saturday through the first round of the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament. The eighth graders defeated the Parkway Panthers 34-18, and the seventh grade squad topped the St. Henry Redskins 29-21.
Kelly Neitfeld scored 13 points to lead the eighth grade Indians (14-1), who outscored Parkway 30-11 over the final three quarters.
Karissa Will, Kylie Kahlig and Michelle Evers each added five points.
Chelsea Pottkotter powered the seventh grade team to its win with eight points. Janelle Schwieterman and Rachel Rammel each added six.
Junior high boys
The seventh grade Indians got knocked out of the winners bracket in the Celina McKirnan Classic with a 42-20 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers.
