FORT RECOVERY - The Indians didn't just end their slump. They pounded it into submission.

Having lost six straight heading into Friday night's action, the Fort Recovery High School softball team clobbered the visiting Fairlawn Jets 20-0 in five innings.

After a scoreless first inning the Tribe scored five times in the second inning, seven in the third and eight in the fourth as it won for the first time in nearly two weeks. All the offense also backed up a one-hit shutout pitching effort from Junior Kinsey Wenning.

FRHS coach Marie Osterholt said despite the string of defeats, her team has kept a good attitude.

"The girls have been working really hard," Osterholt said. "We had a really close game against Coldwater and didn't win it, but they played fantastic. And then we came back and got beat by Minster pretty big. And then they came back tonight and they were really loose and relaxed and confident. It's nice to see. That's what they've got to keep up."

Fort Recovery (3-7), which was held to two or fewer runs four times in their losing streak, erupted in the second inning.

The scoring started with LeAnne Tobin's one-out, RBI double to left field. Joanna Snyder drew a two-out walk to put two runners on, and Heather Schmackers followed with a double to push Tobin and Snyder to the plate. Val Fortkamp added a third extra-base hit in the inning, smashing a triple to right-center field and coming into score on an errant throw by center fielder Courtney Shroyer.

The Indians hit the ball out of the infield just once in their seven-run third inning. They drew three walks, and took advantage of five Fairlawn errors as each of its first 12 runs in the game were unearned.

Tobin added her second double of the game as Fort Recovery scored eight runs - all earned - in the bottom of the fourth for the 20-run margin.

"She hit it good and hard tonight," said Osterholt of her No. 8 hitter, who had three RBIs and two runs. "That's what we want to see from the bottom of our lineup. That was fantastic."

Fortkamp led the impressive offensive performance for the Tribe with two hits, three runs and two RBIs. Schmackers and Kelly Sudhoff each had two hits, three runs and two RBIs, and Wenning went 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

Ashley Grube, Beth May, Jessica Siegrist and Snyder, who drew three of the Indians 10 walks, each scored two runs.

Amanda Francis took the loss for Fairlawn, although all 12 runs against her were unearned She gave up seven hits and six walks while striking out one. Tiffany Hughes gave up eight runs - all earned - on five hits and four walks in one inning.

Osterholt said it was a lot nicer to be on the right side of a mercy rule game after falling 14-2 to Jay County, 19-0 to Van Wert and 12-1 to Minster over the past two weeks.

"It feels a lot better," she said. "The girls hit very well, played great defense, they just did a great job all around.

"They were on fire. We had a lot of hard hit balls, nice line drives."

While the offense went wild, Wenning kept the Jets' at bats short and sweet. She retired the first nine batters she faced before Tiffany Hughes hit an infield single to break up the no hitter.

After Hughes was retired on a fielder's choice, Wenning struck out Katie Guy and Fortkamp threw out Amanda Francis trying to steal second base. Wenning the sat down Fairlawn one-two-three in the fifth inning as she faced the minimum.

She struck out seven batters.

"Kinsey did a fantastic job out there," said Osterholt. "I'll tell you, seven strikeouts and no walks, that's just great. She did a great job.

"The defense is improved. No errors tonight is great. We picked up the balls real clean. We've spent a lot of time the last couple of weeks on defense ... and you can really see the improvement."
