FORT RECOVERY - Field events are Fort Recovery's forte.

The Indians proved as much Tuesday as they hosted the opening day of the Midwest Athletic Conference Championships by winning five of the nine field events. Holly Brunswick turned in two of the wins as the Tribe girls put themselves in second place heading into day two of the meet Friday.

Fort Recovery's girls finished the opening day with 35 points, just two back of leader Versailles in the 10-team field. The boys team is fifth with 25 points while Minster has already staked itself to a sizable lead with 54.5.

Brunswick can claim the title of best jumper in the MAC after winning the league long jump title by nearly a foot at 15 feet, 8 ½ inches. Parkway's Tara Luth was second at 14 feet, 10 ½ inches.

The battle for the high jump crown was closer, with Brunswick and Veronica Bruns of Coldwater each clearing the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches. Brunswick finished first, winning the tiebreaker because she had fewer misses on the day.

Mark Mattraw led the Fort Recovery boys team, turning in his best career throw in the shot put. Seeded at 44 feet, he launched the shot put 46 feet, 8 ½ inches to beat Minster's Jared Sekas for the crown by seven inches.

Mattraw also finished fifth in the discus at 132 feet, 10 inches.

Kylie Kahlig and Aaron Vagedes gave the Indians sweeps of the shot put and long jump titles respectively.

Kahlig easily took the girls shot put, winning by nearly three feet at 36 feet, 7 inches.

And Vagedes barely outdistanced Minster's Derek Collins in the long jump, taking first place by less than two inches at 19 feet, 3 ¾ inches.

Kelsey Fiely added a seventh-place effort in the girls high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches.

In addition to her victories, Brunswick qualified as the No. 3 seed for Friday's finals in the 100 meter hurdles. She won her heat with a time of 16.9 seconds.

Abby May, Brunswick, Kahlig and Fiely also picked up the No. 3 seed in the 4x100 relay with a preliminary time of 52.6. May qualified as the No. 5 seed in the 300 hurdles in 49.3, and Kahlig picked up the No. 5 seed in the 200 dash in 28 flat.

Vagedes earned the final qualifying position in the 200 dash in 24.4.[[In-content Ad]]
