Freeman is Jay's all-time leader

The college basketball regular season is coming to an end.
The NFL has become a year-round sport with the draft and free agency drawing attention from fans.
And scoring records have been a big topic of conversation locally.
Those three topics were the subjects of questions from readers this month. There were also a few about baseball, but I’m not quite ready to transition to the diamond with snow on the ground outside. So, we’ll save those questions and answers for this month.
Today, we start with Big Ten basketball.

Who do you think will win the regular season Big Ten championship and who will win the Big Ten tournament in men's basketball?
—Brianne Wellman, Bloomington

Despite the loss to Minnesota on Tuesday, the Big Ten regular-season title is still Indiana’s to lose.
The Hoosiers have a one-game lead over both Michigan State and Wisconsin, and a two-game advantage over their final two regular-season opponents — Ohio State and Michigan.
Even with those tough games left, they should finish with at least a share of the regular-season title.
Wisconsin has the best chance to pull even with IU as it plays Purdue and Penn State in two of its last three games. The key for the Badgers will be their visit to East Lancing, Mich., on March 7 for a game against the Spartans.
As for the Big Ten Tournament, my pick is the Wolverines.
Just a few weeks ago, Michigan was the No. 1 team in the nation. They have lost three of their last six games, including a stunning defeat Wednesday at Penn State, and will have something to prove in Chicago.

With NFL free agency starting March 12, who are your top five free agents and where do you think they will land?
—Jason McGraw, Portland

First, a few notes: I am considering only unrestricted free agents, which eliminates guys like Victor Cruz. I took age into consideration, which hurt players like Steven Jackson and Ed Reed. And to make things a bit more interesting, I limited myself to one player per position.
My top-five list is as follows: Ryan Clady, Joe Flacco, Anthony Spencer, Mike Wallace and Jairus Byrd.
While Clady, Denver’s left tackle, and Spencer, a linebacker for Dallas, may not be household names, they are two of the best in the NFL at their positions. Byrd is a two-time Pro Bowler who lacks name recognition mostly because he plays in Buffalo. All three are likely to stay put. They will either re-sign or get the franchise tag.
Flacco is a player I have never been high on, but his timing could not have been better. He made himself a ton of money by throwing for 11 touchdowns and no interceptions in the playoffs on the way to winning the Super Bowl MVP. The city of Baltimore would probably riot if the Ravens let him get away.
Wallace is the only one of these players that is likely to leave his current team. The franchise that should make a strong play for him is receiver-depleted Miami. Cleveland and Carolina have also been mentioned among teams interested in his services.

Who is the all-time leader in basketball points scored at Jay County High School and what is the point total?
—Phil Ford, Dunkirk

Mr. Ford tried to throw in a trick question just a few days after Brock McFarland broke Dan Ferrell’s scoring record. But there is one player in Jay County history who scored more points than either McFarland or Ferrell.
The No. 1 spot on the list belongs to Shannon Freeman.
The 1986 JCHS graduate scored 1,458 points during her career with the Patriot girls basketball team. She was an Indiana All-Star and was honored in 2011 as a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s Silver Anniversary Team.
Freeman, who continued her career at the University of Kentucky and then Ball State, also holds the Jay County record for rebounds with 831.
McFarland ranks second behind Freeman with 1,165 points and counting. The only other players in JCHS history to break the 1,000-point mark are Ferrell (1,155) for the boys and Carissa Phillips (1,073) for the girls.
