WAPAKONETA, Ohio - A quick start Saturday left no doubt.
Greg Kahlig scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter for Fort Recovery High School's boys basketball team. The Indians scored the game's first seven points and had a 15-1 lead before the Wapakoneta Redskins made their first field goal, rolling to a 54-33 victory.
Senior Toby Metzger hit the game's opening basket, and then Kahlig took over. The junior hit two 3-pointers and recorded a three-point play during the opening 15-1 run.
Jacob Heinl finally hit a field goal for Wapkoneta with 56 seconds to go in the first quarter, but his team never got within single digits and trailed by as many as 28.
Kahlig lit up the Redskins for 8-of-14 from the field, including three 3-pointers. He also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Metzger, returning after suffering a season-ending knee injury last season, kicked off his senior campaign with eight points and three assists. Frank Thien added seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.
Mike Bogan was the only Wapakoneta player in double figures as he finished with 10 points, six rebounds and two assists. The Redskins shot just 29 percent from the field.
Jordan Ruppert added five points, and Jacob Lambert had six rebounds.
Junior varsity
Trailing by three with just one period to play, Fort Recovery rallied for a 34-30 victory over the Redskins.
Shane Brunswick scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Tribe, which outscored Wapakoneta 14-7 in the fourth quarter. Ryan Schoen added seven points.
Tyler Bertram had eight points for the Redskins. Nick Duff and Kaleb Vondenhuevel each added six points.[[In-content Ad]]
