FRHS junior headed to state
FRHS track
TROY, Ohio - During her freshman season, Holly Brunswick fell agonizingly short of a state berth.
At the regional meet, in which the top four athletes advance to the state finals, only a tiebreaker kept her from a trip to Columbus. Wednesday night, she made sure the tiebreaker did not come into play.
Brunswick, a Fort Recovery High School junior, finished fourth in the high jump at the Division III regional meet hosted by Troy to advance to the state finals.
She will compete at the OHSAA Division III Track and Field State Finals at The Ohio State University's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Friday, June 4, at 3 p.m.
Brunswick was one of eight athletes to clear the bar at 5 feet or better in the high jump field. She matched the height she turned in last week when she finished third in the district meet - 5 feet, 2 inches - to place fourth, one inch ahead of Tiffany Geise of St. John's, Kate Yeazel from New Paris and Kennedy Boggs of Jefferson.
Ansonia senior Ariel Edwards set a new regional record as she finished first at 5 feet, 8 inches.
During her freshman season, Brunswick was one of seven athletes who all cleared the bar at the same height as they vied for the final two state-qualifying sports.
She missed out on a state berth by way of the tiebreaker.
Aaron Vagedes nearly joined Brunswick in earning a trip to Columbus as he finished fifth in the long jump.
The sophomore sat in third place after the preliminary round - three jumps - with a leap of 20 feet, 5 ½ inches. He dropped to fourth heading into the last jump of the finals, and then got bumped to fifth with Cincinnati Clark's Calen Settles soared to a distance of 20 feet, 9 inches.
Settles' final effort pushed him all the way to second place - he finished behind winner Tariq Sanders of Lockland at 21 feet, 2 ¾ inches - and pushed Vagedes down to fifth. Vagedes finished just one inch behind Mechanicsburg's Alex Peoples.
The regional meet continues Friday at Troy at 5 p.m. with Sam Tobe and Brunswick each competing in one event.
Brunswick is seeded seventh for the girls long jump, and Tobe is the No. 15 seed in the girls 3,200 run.[[In-content Ad]]
