FRHS loses, shares crown

FRHS boys basketball

NEW BREMEN, Ohio - A win in either of their last two Midwest Athletic Conference games would have given the Indians the outright league title. Instead, they settled for a three-way tie.

With a 50-47 loss to the New Bremen Cardinals in its regular-season finale Saturday, the Division IV No. 8 Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team finished with a 7-2 record in the MAC.

The Tribe shares the conference title with New Bremen and St. John's, which it lost to Feb. 19 after winning its first seven conference games. It is the first championship for the Indians since 1999.

While Fort Recovery (17-3) trailed the entire second half in the loss to St. John's, it was in control with just a few minutes to play against the Cardinals (17-3).

A pair of free throws from senior Greg Kahlig gave the Indians a 47-42 lead with just three minutes to play. But they failed to score the rest of the way.

New Bremen finished on an 8-0 run, all on free throws, tying the game and then taking the lead when Andy Timmerman hit a pair with 1:07 remaining. After a couple of missed field goals for the Tribe, Timmerman split two foul shots with 29 seconds left.

An FRHS turnover put Timmerman at the line again with just six seconds on the clock, and he made the first to extend the Cardinals' lead to three. He missed the second, but Jason Pottkotter's 3-point try to tie the game at the buzzer was no good.

The Indians went 0-for-5 from the field with a pair of turnovers in the final three minutes as the game slipped away.

Kahlig led Fort Recovery by shooting 11-of-17, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, for 30 points. He also had six rebounds and a pair of blocks.

The senior has 1,624 career points, just 120 off of the conference record, as the team heads into tournament play.

Craig Tobe added eight points, all in the first half, and six rebounds for the Tribe. Cody Fiely had four assists.

Clay Heitkamp scored 18 points for New Bremen, which finished with just five turnovers and overcame an 11-4 first-quarter deficit. Justin Eilerman added 12 points and six rebounds.

Fort Recovery will play for a sectional title Friday at Coldwater at 6:15 p.m. It will take on the winner of Tuesday's opening-round Division IV game between New Knoxville and Waynesfield-Goshen.

A five-point lead after three quarters disappeared as the Indians lost 48-44 to New Bremen.

Jared Kahlig had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Fort Recovery (5-13), which allowed just two third-quarter points before getting outscored 19-10 in the fourth. Trent Kaiser had 10 points, and Ryan Schoen added eight rebounds and eight assists.

Elliott Westerbeck had 14 points and eight boards to pace the Cardinals.[[In-content Ad]]
