FORT RECOVERY - One inning killed the Indians in the opener, but they were able to bounce back in game two.
An 11-run inning led to a 21-14 loss for the Fort Recovery High School softball team against the Botkins Trojans in Saturday's first game. But they took a five-run lead in the second game and held on for a 7-6 victory.
The Indians (2-1) won game two behind the bats of LeAnne Tobin and Val Fortkamp. They each finished 2-for-4, with Tobin driving in three runs and Fortkamp scoring twice.
Ashley Grube and Carla Guggenbiller finished with two RBIs apiece.
Beth May improved to 2-0 with the victory, allowing six runs - four earned - on just two hits. She walked seven and struck out three.
Fort Recovery took an 11-4 lead in the opener, but gave up 11 runs in the sixth inning. Bekah Brunswick took the loss, giving up 16 runs - five earned - on nine hits in three innings.
Grube had two hits, including a triple, three RBIs and two runs for the Indians. Tobin was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs, and May and Heather Schmackers each had two hits and two runs.
Junior varsity
ST. HENRY, Ohio - The Indians split their first two games of the season, winning the opener 10-4 over the St. Henry Redskins before falling 7-6 in eight innings in game two.
Olivia Thien led the victory with a double, a triple, two runs and two RBIs. Shelby Brunswick and Hillary Staugler each had two hits, and Carly Staugler and Josie Guggenbiller scored two runs apiece.
Brunswick picked up the win, giving up four runs on seven hits. She struck out six and walked three.
Fort Recovery led the second game 4-3 before St. Henry scored in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The Indians then grabbed a 6-4 lead, only to have the Redskins rally again in the bottom of the eighth.
Brunswick suffered the defeat, giving up seven runs - five earned - on 11 hits as she went the distance. She walked five and struck out four.
