FORT RECOVERY - Third is guaranteed. Second remains a possibility.
The Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team earned at least a third-place finish in the Midwest Athletic Conference Thursday with its 52-45 victory over the New Bremen Cardinals.
The Indians led by as many as 11 points, but their advantage dwindled to just three points when Stacy Timmerman split a pair of free throws with 51 seconds remaining.
However, New Bremen got now closer as Joanna Snyder, Nicole Pottkotter and Kelsey Wuebker combined for six Tribe points in the final 40 seconds.
Fort Recovery is now 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the MAC. It could finish in a tie for second place with a win over Parkway (2-16, 0-8 MAC) and a Minster (11-7, 4-4 MAC) upset of Division IV No. 6 St. John's (16-2, 7-1).
Anne Koesters led the Indians, shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line for 17 points. She also had 10 rebounds for a double-double and a pair of blocks.
Snyder finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Timmerman racked up 18 points, 12 rebounds and three steals for New Bremen, which shot just 21 percent in the second half.
Jaclyn Dabbelt scored 11 points, and LeAnn Topp had six rebounds.
Junior varsity
The Indians improved to 13-4 on the season with a 47-26 victory over New Bremen.
FRHS led by six after the opening period and took control with a 14-2 second quarter. Kendra Brunswick scored 10 points, and Josie Guggenbiller added six points and five rebounds.
Jessica May powered the Cardinals with nine points, seven steals and four rebounds.
