FR's Brunswick sixth in high jump (05/29/08)
FRHS track
DAYTON, Ohio - If the Indians are going send a track and field athlete to the state finals for a fourth year in a row, it'll have to happen Saturday afternoon.
Fort Recovery High School's three attempts at earning a state qualifier at Tuesday's opening day of the regional competition at Perc Welcome Stadium fell short.
The Tribe picked up two points, placing it 13th out of 14 scoring teams. It has had athletes at the state finals in each of the last three seasons with Holly Stein and Matt Vagedes each earning state medals last year.
The regional meet, from which the top four competitors in each event advance to the state finals, continues Saturday at 2 p.m.
Freshman Holly Brunswick picked up the two Fort Recovery points Tuesday in the high jump. She finished in a tie for sixth place with Tiffany Geise of Delphos St. John's and Stephanie Mayo of Ansonia at 4 feet, 10 inches.
The final state-qualifying athletes, Emily Amburgey of Camden Preble and Ariel Edwards of Ansonia, also cleared the bar at 4 feet, 10 inches, but had fewer misses than Brunswick, Geise, May and fifth-place finisher Emily Barhorst of Minster.
Brunswick also competed in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles. She finished 11th in 17.02 seconds, falling short of qualifying for Saturday's finals by 0.25 seconds.
The only other event the Indians competed in Tuesday was the 4x800 relay. Tina Roessner, Amber Heitkamp, Abby Sudhoff and Abby Huelskamp combined to finish 14th in the 15-team field in 11-minutes, 8.02 seconds.
On Saturday, Roessner will be the No. 3 seed in the 3,200 run and Brunswick the No. 6 seed in the long jump. Anne Koesters will compete as the No. 10 seed in the shot put.[[In-content Ad]]
