FR's Brunswick wins district title (05/23/08)

MINSTER, Ohio - It didn't take long for Holly Brunswick to assert herself.
The Fort Recovery High School freshman walked into the district meet at Minster Thursday night, won the long jump competition, qualified for regional in the long jump and put herself in position for a third regional berth. Her effort powered the Indians to a third-place standing after the first day of the district meet with 27 ½ points.
Marion Local (32) leads the competition, which continues Saturday, and the host Wildcats (29) are in second place.
The top four competitors in each event advance to the regional tournament next week at Piqua.
Fort Recovery did not score any post in the boys competition Thursday, but qualified several runners for Saturday's finals. New Bremen leads the standings with 24 points, followed by Marion Local (22).
Brunswick led a high jump field in which no seniors finished among the top 10. She and Marian Bevington of Parkway each cleared the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches, and Brunswick took the win because she had fewer misses.
Beth Muhlenkamp scored points for the Tribe in the high jump as well, tying for seventh at 4 feet, 10 inches.
Brunswick also placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 11¼ inches.
She and teammate Sylvia Schwieterman each qualified for Saturday's semifinals in the 100-meter hurdles. Brunswick had the second-best qualifying time at 16.65 seconds behind Bevington (16.16), and Schwieterman qualified 12th at 19.03.
Anne Koesters gave the Indians a third regional berth in the field events, finishing fourth in the shot put. She was just 3¼ inches behind third-place finisher Mallorie Wilson of Jefferson at 34 feet, 2¼ inches.
Fort Recovery also advanced to the regional meet in the 4x800 relay. Tina Roessner, Abby Sudhoff, Amber Heitkamp and Abby Huelskamp teamed for a third-place finish in 10-minutes, 49.88 seconds.
Marissa Brunswick qualified sixth for Saturday's finals in the 400 dash in 1:07.75, and 12th for the semifinals of the 200 dash in 29.19. Heitkamp was the No. 6 qualifier in the 300 hurdles in 52.3, Huelskamp was ninth in the 800 run at 2:42.8 and Alison Tobe was 15h in the 100 dash in 14.25.
Michael Trobridge led the boys team by qualifying for the semifinals in both the 200 dash and 100 dash. He was seventh and 13th respectively in times of 24.35 and 12.07.
Adam Steinbrunner qualified 15th for the finals of the 800 run in 2:13, and Perry Hull picked up the 16th and final qualifying spot for the semifinals of the 100 dash in 12.87.
Senior Matt Vagedes, who finished third in the state last season in the pole vault, did not compete because of a violation of team rules.
