It took a marathon match to pull it off, but Chance Fuller and Landry Inman extended their season.
The Jay County High School dual won at No. 1 doubles in the team sectional Friday and will move on in the doubles tournament.
The Patriot team ended its season with a 4-1 loss to the Northeastern Knights.
“It’s a good feeling,” said JCHS coach Barry Weaver of Inman and Fuller. “They played well in the third and deciding set. Being down 0-4 is pretty tough. To come back and overcome it, that’s neat. It shows a lot of character.”
The Patriot pair had to bounce back from a 6-3 loss in the opening set and then a 4-0 deficit in the third. Fuller and Inman won five of the next six games and eventually forced the tiebreaker, and then took control with their season on the line.
Jay County’s duo scored the first three points of the tiebreaker, let the lead dwindle to 6-5 and then finished off the match when Ryan Hester of the nights hit a shot into the net. The 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory for Inman and Fuller sends them to the doubles sectional Tuesday at Marion.
In the other doubles match Thursday, the Patriots’ Tony Schwieterman and Morton Garringer fell 6-3, 6-1 to Shane Stiner and Tyler York. Derek Smith dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Jacob Rankin at No. 1 singles, Brad Leuthold fell 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 and Josh Martin suffered a 6-3, 6-3 defeat at No. 3.[[In-content Ad]]
