Funds OK'd for census campaign
Jay County Commissioners
The county chipped in its contribution Monday to raise awareness for the upcoming census.
The commissioners approved $2,900 to be used for advertising to raise awareness for this year's census. Forms should be delivered to residents sometime in March.
The $6,000 advertising campaign is being headed up by community developer Ami Huffman, who has already received $1,700 from the City of Portland, $200 from Pennville and $100 from Bryant, in addition to the county share.
She is still waiting for final approval of $700 from Dunkirk and $400 from Redkey.
"We're going to do (a newspaper) ad on Saturdays with a fact (about the census)," she said. "And then we're going to do radio spots. And it will go from hopefully next week ... to the end of March."
The census Web site hails the 2010 form as "10 questions. 10 minutes." The form will include questions about name, gender, age, race, number of residents in households, and whether the household is rented or owned, among others.
The census information is used for deciding representation in government and how federal funding is distributed around the nation.
In other business Monday, the commissioners:
•Approved five emergency claims including: $15 to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles for license plate renewal; $7,500, $32,500 and $43,204 to Jay County Development Corporation for their annual tax draw, and $2,400 to the Jay County Auditor's office to purchase postal supplies.
•Received a request from Thomas Emerick, 2409 South 50 East for a county loan to install a septic system at the property. The commissioners set a public hearing for the request Jan. 25 at 10 a.m.
•Received information about a prescription drug card program from Lola Materna of Patient Assistance. The cards will be distributed to local providers.[[In-content Ad]]
