Jay County Commissioners

Jay County was paid more than a quarter of a million dollars for housing out-of-county inmates in 2012.
Sheriff Ray Newton told Jay County Commissioners this morning that Delaware County provided $149,100 in reimbursement for housing prisoners at the Jay County Jail.
Madison County’s total reimbursement was $54,530, while the Indiana Department of Correction reimbursed Jay County $51,110 for housing inmates.
A total of $18,659.90 was also reimbursed for inmate meals.
Currently there are about 10 to 15 DOC inmates at the jail, but that number is expected to drop as prisoners are moved out. “We had a lot of troublemakers,” Newton said.
The commissioners noted that the Federal Emergency Management Agency says it has now posted preliminary revisions to the Flood Insurance Rate Map and the Flood Insurance Study for the unincorporated parts of the county on the Internet.
The proposed flood hazard map may be seen at http://www.in.gov/dnr/water/6647.htm. There is a 90-day appeals process before the flood hazard areas are finalized.
In other business, commissioners:
•Authorized the sheriff to go ahead with the purchase of $5,677.79 in ammunition from funds in his budget.
•Heard a presentation by Peggy Cenova, regional director of the Indiana Small Business Development Center, who said the Muncie office serves 11 counties. She’s seeking local government support for the office’s efforts.
“It’s been a valuable resource in many communities,” Jay County Development Corporation executive director Bill Bradley said this morning. “We’re one of the few counties that does not now contribute.”
Bradley said he would return to the commissioners at a later date with a proposal for consideration in next year’s budget.
•Authorized Jay Superior Court Judge Max Ludy as the purchasing agent for up to $5,000 in new office furniture. The funds were in his 2013 budget.
•Heard Sheriff Newton report that his office investigated 282 crimes in 2012, made 1,495 traffic stops, issued 290 traffic tickets and 481 warnings, made 404 criminal arrests and 39 DUI arrests. The sheriff’s office also investigated 343 accidents, including 5 fatalities and 109 vehicle-deer accidents. Sheriff’s office staff drove 475,066 miles and answered 4,854 complaints. The 911 dispatch center received 535 landline calls and 3,668 wireless calls. A total of 1,069 adult males and 348 adult females were processed through the jail, with the daily inmate population averaging 77.[[In-content Ad]]
